British Home Children Society

British Home Children Society

100,000 British Home Children were sent to Canada to work as indentured farm labourers and domestic servants as part of the British Child Emigration Scheme to Canada (1870-1957). Their familial ties were broken once ‘in care’ and sent to Canada. Many British Home Children spent their lives trying to find their parents and siblings. Many of their descendants have inherited their ancestors’ lifelong search for their identities. The primary goal of the British Home Children Society is to maintain a comprehensive database of individual British Home Children records called the British Home Children Registry (50,000 records).

Atlas and Cyclopedia of Ireland

Atlas and Cyclopedia of Ireland

The Atlas provides information on each of the 32 Irish counties, including origin of the county name, size and population, geographical features, ancient divisions and designations (including the main clans associated with each). There is also a map for each county, showing the cities, towns, villages and baronies, as well as the rivers and roads etc. The information on the population of the counties and major towns, and the clearly marked baronies on the individual maps, should prove of use and interest to genealogists involved in studying their Irish ancestry.

Family Reunions

If you haven't done a family reunion, I would highly recommend that you organize one. Having had our second one, this past weekend, be such a success we are now planning a third next summer.

The wealth of new information obtained, seeing family who we seldom see, and meeting family members whom we have never met before make the work required seen so miminal.

We kept it simple and just enjoyed the visiting.

See you all in the chat room soon

Map Of London And Its Vicinity - 1837 - Free Online

I received this message on a rootsweb mailing list I belong to and thought it might be of interest to people with ancestors in London, England ......

For those of you searching for your ancestors in London, I have just displayed a high quality map of London and Environs from 1837 on the MAPCO website. You can view it here:

Cary's New Plan Of London And Its Vicinity 1837

Use the thumbnails to navigate your way around the map. Hovering your mouse pointer over the thumbnails will display a pop-up message showing the areas covered by that map section.

There are also 2 enlarged images of each map section. These are accessed by clicking on the left half or right half of the map image itself. Again, a pop-up "Click To Enlarge" message will be displayed when you hover your mouse pointer over the image.

This is one of the finest London maps displayed on the MAPCO website. Someone recently described the MAPCO's maps as "deliciously hi-res". This has always been my aim, and I think that this Cary map from 1837 is one of the best yet. I do hope that you enjoy it.

A recent change of jobs, combined with a terrible bout of flu, has meant that work on the MAPCO site had all but ceased in recent weeks. Work on Cary's New Plan Of London 1837 commenced some time ago, but I have only found time to complete it in the past day. I apologise for the delay in displaying this map, and hope that you think it has been worth the wait. This map of London is the first of many that will be displayed in coming months.
