Free New Zealand resource: Papers Past

http://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/cgi-bin/paperspast

Papers Past contains more than one million pages of digitised New Zealand newspapers and periodicals. The collection covers the years 1840 to 1915 and includes publications from all regions of New Zealand.

Now, 23 of the 44 newspapers and periodicals are searchable.

If you have NZ connections in the above time period, look and see if there are any printed records.

In the 19th century, NZ newspapers had a wire service, so it's not unusual to find stories about ancestors printed by publications from different geographical regions of the country.

There are advanced options that allow you to search particular newspapers or date ranges, as well as ignore advertisements.

Given that past NZ governments didn't bother to retain census records, here is one resource that just might enable you to locate that elusive ancestor.

Small and Special

"Small and Special is a collection of resources relating to the early years of The Hospital for Sick Children at Great Ormond Street, England’s first in-patient children’s hospital. Here you can trace a patient, learn about childhood diseases, or investigate a member of the medical staff.

Small and Special includes a database of patient admission records - from the Hospital’s first in-patient in 1852 to the last admission in 1914; a collection of articles on the early history of the Hospital and pen-portraits of the Hospital’s personalities; and a gallery of images.

Browse around the site to discover its treasures. Better still, register now. It costs nothing, and registered users get access to more detailed information and the ability to print and download results of searches."

Fadedgenes.co.uk

From their website

"This is a project to re-discover the ancestry of some of those who gave their lives during the First World War. I am gathering the names from various war memorials around East Kent, with the intention of providing some ancestral details for those listed.

For the many individuals where the ancestral research has not yet been done, I have attempted at least to identify the person, and to provide a link to their details on the Commonwealth War Graves Commission website"

Chat

There has been a huge outcry not to close the chat. Since I did the last posting to the blog, the room has been steady enough to keep it going (if it stays the way it has been).

The last thing I want to do is close it. So users please continue logging in as often as possible. Even if you only log in for 5 or 10 minutes a day.

The person who logged in most times this past year was Paul, followed closely by Chub. I spent the most hours there and Rosey came in 2nd with hours spent in chat.

Happy Holidays

Happy Holidays

I have been forced to be away from the chat and all of Looking 4 Kin for several months now.

If I don't get on before the holidays I wish all of you a wonderful holiday season and all the best in the New Year

On a different note- the chat room is almost dead now so a huge question arises DO I RENEW it for another year and sit there alone 90 % of the time when I can get on or do I give it up as a lost cause? If I give up the chat room then Looking 4 Kin website and all the message boards will also go.

I guess I will leave it up to the site users,if there is not more traffic in the chat I will be forced to give up as much as I know the chat is a great place to give and recieve help and a talk out our genealogy problems.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year

Hi everyone

Information from The National Archives of Ireland site

"The first phase of the Irish 1901 and 1911 census website, containing the records for Dublin 1911, fully indexed by name, and with free access to the digitised images of the original manuscript household forms, was launched on 3 December 2007. The site also contains a wealth of photographs and essays on life on Dublin at that time, with links to illustrative census forms."
