Marshfield Public Library Genealogy Index - Wisconsin

Marshfield Public Library

"This database represents over 20 years of work by many individuals. Volunteers representing the Marshfield Area Genealogy Group and Marshfield Public Library culled through microfilm newspapers for records of births, deaths and marriages. Their efforts were complemented by the work of GreenThumb/Experience Works/Senior Aides worker, Hilly Weimert. Work on the index is continuous, with new events added each month.

This Genealogy Index is an online index to over 200,000 events reported in the following Marshfield newspapers over the years as indicated.
Marshfield Times February 1882 – October 1919
Marshfield News September 1889 – August 1920
Marshfield Herald May 1911 – August 1927
Marshfield News Herald Various, 1990-2007

Events are coded with a B, M, or D.
Events coded with a B include birth announcements, baptisms, christenings, adoptions, birthday anniversaries, naturalizations, military awards, information about veterans, and other events. Events coded with an M include marriage announcements, marriage licenses, engagement announcements, wedding anniversaries, and divorces. Events coded with a D include death announcements, obituaries, funeral announcements, probate notices, wills, and pension announcements. Although not all entries are specifically a birth, death, or marriage record, they are included to provide profitable leads for family researchers.

Brief notes are included, but the actual newspaper article should be seen for the search to be comprehensive. They may be viewed on microfilm at the Library. Names are entered exactly as they are listed in the newspaper. When two spellings of a name exist within the same article, both spellings are indexed. For consistency, the names of Catholic nuns are all listed with Sister as the surname.

Family History

Don’t let your family history become just a list of facts.

It is not a race to see how far back you can go. Or how many names you have in your database.

In Family History the first word is Family, this means people, real people who had real lives. They were not just names, dates and places.

Collect certificates, newspaper articles, photos and stories to go along with each person.

Something as simple as a signature on a document makes that person so much more real, not just an ancestor, not just a name.

Bring the meaning of Family back into your research.

Above contributed by one of the chatters in Looking 4 Kin Genealogy Chat who does not wish to have name attached.

Hidden Lives Revealed - A Virtual Archive, 1881 - 1918

Hidden Lives Revealed provides an intriguing encounter with children who were in the care of The Children's Society in late Victorian and early 20th Century Britain.

The Photograph Section
About 200 photographs that show the kind of background many of the children came from - and how different that was from daily life in the homes.

The Case Files Section
About 22,500 children were looked after by the Waifs and Strays' Society between its foundation in 1881 - and the end of the First World War in 1918. A selection of these children’s files are available here, in full - but fully anonymised.

The Homes Section
The Waifs and Strays' Society operated nearly 175 children's homes up to 1918 - although not all at once. Browse or search through their stories here.

It's All In A Name

How many times have you run across a family in the census which looks like yours, but the names aren't quite right? Or you find what appears to be your great-grandfather's marriage license, except it says he's married to someone named Minnie, instead of your great-grandmother Mary? Our ancestors who seemed to change their names often leave us puzzled and frustrated, when in fact such apparent name changes are often just a result of the recording of an individual's nickname or middle name in the official records.

Nicknames can be very important clues in your genealogy quest. You may often find that an ancestor is known by another name other then that given at birth. Nicknames are most often given to children and can be assumed by them throughout life. This can cause them to later appear in official records. When searching for an individual who has a nickname it's important that you search under both their true and nickname (as well as mispellings) before crossing that potential source off the list. To record a nickname in your WRITTEN genealogy, place that nickname beside the real name in parenthesis.

Proper recording of nicknames and aliases in your genealogy is extremely important as it will remind you, as well as alert anybody reviewing your genealogy, that the person who is recorded in your records is known by more then one name.

Tip for finding maiden names

"In the lower left corner of most old deeds you will find two to four witnesses. The first one is always from the husband's side, the next two from the wife's side. That is to protect her one-half dower rights under the law. Nothing you will ever use will give greater clues to maiden names."

The above tip was found in a Minnesota Genealogical Newsletter and sent to me but with no ref. as to newletter name

That's my family

That's my family

This site is single tool to search multiple databases in various Canadian provinces.

They state on site"

"The federated search engine offered on this page was launched and is maintained by Bibliothèque et Archives nationales du Québec (BAnQ). Library and Archives Canada (LAC) partners with BAnQ to oversee the evolution of this project which is also supported by the Council of Provincial and Territorial Archivists (CPTA) of Canada.

The search tool, free of charge and available in French and in English, leads to genealogy and family history databases hosted by federal, provincial or territorial archives centres and libraries, or by other partners.

The quality of the results obtained by using the federated search engine depends on the nature and structure of the information collected in the searched databases. For more information on the characteristics of these databases, please click on the Sources tab on the home page of the interface."

After remembering to check the province I wanted to search in I found the site fast and easy to use.

In Search of Your Canadian Past: The Canadian County Atlas Digital Project

As Stated on their website:

"Professional genealogists have recognized the importance of these atlases for many years. Although some of these atlases were reprinted during the 1970s, the fact is that many of these reprints are becoming as rare as the originals. McGill's Rare Books and Special Collections Division is fortunate in owning copies of many of the original atlases.

Begun in July 1998, the County Atlas pilot project initially encompassed ten atlases. Two subsequent Phases allowed the completion of the Ontario map, ultimately totalling forty-three atlases.

The County Atlas Digital Project is a searchable database of the property owners' names which appear on the township maps in the county atlases. Township maps, portraits and properties have been scanned, with links from the property owners' names in the database."

Northern Ireland Research at PRONI

As per the PRONI website:

"Welcome to the new PRONI website

Welcome to the new PRONI website which was launched in January 2008. PRONI aims to identify, preserve and make available Northern Ireland's unique archival heritage and community memory.

All the information that was available on our old site has been rearranged into a new structure, plus lots of new information has been added! We hope you find this site user friendly, helpful and informative."

The Family history section states:

"Family history

The Public Record Office of Northern Ireland (PRONI) holds many valuable sources for family history research.

If you are just beginning your research and have no experience of family history, read our family history: getting started and family history: key sources sections first. You may also find it useful to read what are archives and records and using the archives.

Family history researchers at all levels will find valuable information in the Your Family Tree Series of leaflets. There are 28 leaflets in total, each giving information on various archives which can be used for genealogical research. Each leaflet is a PDF document – you can download the whole series and use them as a reference file if you wish.

In addition to using the archives we have specifically identified, you can also consult the catalogues, guides and indexes to widen your search.

What's available online?

The Ulster Covenant archive

The archive of the Ulster Unionist Council, held by the Public Record Office of Northern Ireland (PRONI), contains just under half a million original signatures and addresses of the men who, on 28 September 1912, signed the Ulster Covenant, and of the women who signed the parallel Declaration. In total, the Covenant was signed by 237,368 men, and the Declaration by 234,046 women.

Previously the Covenant was difficult and very time-consuming to access and, consequently, it was under-used. PRONI has now improved access by digitising all the signatures, in recognition that the on-line database should make a significant contribution to both genealogical research and cultural tourism.

Freeholders records are lists of people entitled to vote, or of people who voted, at elections. A freeholder was a man who owned his land outright (in fee) or who held it by lease which could be for one or more lives (for example, his own life or for the lives of other people named in the lease). From 1727 to 1793 only Protestants with a freehold worth at least 40 shillings a year were legally permitted to vote. Between 1793 and 1829 both Protestants and Catholics with 40 shilling freeholds could vote, but in 1829 the franchise level was increased to 10 pounds, so 40 shilling freeholders were no longer allowed to vote. This last measure increased the influence of landlords by effectively confining membership of Parliament to the propertied or monied classes.

These online archives are fully searchable and have links to digitised images of the original documents.

A project to index and digitise 1858 - c1900 wills from the District Probate Registries of Armagh, Belfast and Londonderry is almost complete. Phase one - an index to the will calendar entries (grants of probate and letters of administration) - is now available on the PRONI website. Phase two - to link the will calendar entries to the digitised images of the wills - will follow shortly.

Family history researchers can search for ancestors who may be recorded in the above sources.

Some of PRONI's guides and indexes are also available online.

Murphy's Laws of Family History

The keeper of the vital records you need will just have been insulted by another genealogist.

Your great-grandfather's obituary states that he died, leaving no issue of record.

The town clerk you wrote to in desperation, and finally convinced to give you the information you need, can't write legibly, and doesn't have a copying machine.

That ancient photograph of four relatives, one of whom is your progenitor, carries the names of the other three.

Copies of old newspapers have holes which occur only on maiden names.

No one in your family tree ever did anything noteworthy, always rented property, was never sued, and was never named in wills.

You learned that Great aunt Matilda's executor just sold her life's collection of family genealogical materials to a flea market dealer "somewhere in New York City."

Yours is the ONLY last name not found among the three billion in the world famous Mormon archives in Salt Lake City.

Ink fades and paper deteriorates at a rate inversely proportional to the value of the data recorded.

The critical link in your family tree is named "Smith."

Northern Ireland Online Genealogy Centre

The Northern Ireland Online Genealogy Centre aims to provide a single gateway to genealogical sources for those researching their family history in Northern Ireland.

Online sources of genealogical information in Northern Ireland are limited and, where possible, links to these sources will be provided, otherwise the links will be to the websites of organisations which hold the primary, or occasionally secondary, sources.

The Quick Guide gives you a summary of the main sources of genealogical information in Northern Ireland and is a good start when you are researching your family history.

A must see site for anyone researching in Northern Ireland.

The series on passports and identity papers is comprised of about 11,400 files on Jewish, Ukrainian and Finnish immigrants who came to Canada from the Russian Empire. The series includes passport applications and questionnaires containing general information. First released at the end of October 2006, the remaining 35 000 digitized images were recently added, bringing up the total of images to 55 000.

Mid-Kent Marriages Index 1754-1911

As per the site:

"The Mid-Kent Marriages Index 1754-1911 is the work of local historian and genealogist David Hills, who has painstakingly transcribed the marriage records of seven registration districts in the mid Kent area: East Ashford, West Ashford, Cranbrook, Elham, Hollingbourne, Romney Marsh and Tenterden. This online version of these transcriptions was produced by Gary Samson with the assistance of Bob Chown, both of the Woodchurch Ancestry Group."
