Irish-American Heritage Month, 2008

"White House News

Irish-American Heritage Month, 2008
A Proclamation by the President of the United States of America

Since the earliest days of our Republic, Irish Americans have enriched our culture with their faith, values, and hard work. During the month of March, we celebrate the contributions of Americans who trace their ancestry back to Ireland's shores.

Many of the sons and daughters of Erin came to America fleeing famine and poverty. They came with dreams of opportunity, and they helped to build our democracy and advance the cause of liberty. Irish Americans in all walks of life have made lasting contributions to our Nation, and we honor the service of Irish Americans in America's Armed Forces. Throughout our history, those claiming Irish ancestry have helped shape and strengthen America, including as signers of the Declaration of Independence and as Presidents of the United States.

This month, we celebrate the patriotic and proud people who originated from the Emerald Isle and who have played a vital role in the story of this Nation of immigrants. "

Nationwide Gravesite Locator

"Search for burial locations of veterans and their family members in VA National Cemeteries, state veterans cemeteries, various other military and Department of Interior cemeteries, and for veterans buried in private cemeteries when the grave is marked with a government grave marker.

The Nationwide Gravesite Locator includes burial records from many sources. These sources provide varied data; some searches may contain less information than others. Information on veterans buried in private cemeteries was collected for the purpose of furnishing government grave markers, and we do not have information available for burials prior to 1997."

Dating old vs new

Prior to Sept. 3, 1752, the Protestant countries used the Julian calendar. On that date, England and its dominions all adopted the Gregorian calendar. In actuality, Sept. 3rd didn't exist. The date jumped from Sept. 2, 1752 to Sept. 14, 1752. This was due to a lot of leap days that were inserted over the centuries that shouldn't have been. For more on this, read http://www.norbyhus.dk/calendar.html.

Our stricter Puritan ancestors, and the Quakers, did not like using the names of the months and days as they were all pagan names. So, they used numerical dates. The date was first, then the month and then the year. (This is still the way the majority of the world writes their dates.) To make this more confusing, the first month was March. So, the date above, 15 (3) 1647, would be 15 May 1647. This date would have been written 15: 3m: 1647 in the Essex county VRs. There were differences in how the editors handled the printing.

The first day of the year, what we would call New Year's Day, was March 25th. However, for dating purposes, the entire month of March was considered the first month.

That gets into dual dating, i.e. 4 Jan 1677/8. This date could also have been written 4: 11m: 1677. The dual date indicates that the date is the end of 1677 and is also the first of 1678. The dual dating is not a modern convention for people who have only known one dating system. Our ancestors actually wrote these dates this way.

An O.S. on a headstone indicates the date was prior to Sept. 1752 and was not changed to reflect the change that occurred in 1752. As most people are aware, our ancestors seldom put a death date on a headstone. They would put the person's age in years, months and days. I have never found out if the computation for those whose lives spanned the change took into account the 12 days that were dropped.

This is an important topic. The dates that various countries changed are scattered from 1582 right up into the 20th century. There is a table of dates for just about every country's change and how it affected their calendar. You should be aware of these dates as you pursue your ancestry from other countries.

This is the calendar date conversion from the Roman/old style started 3/25/ PRE 1752 and the New Style (Gregorian) calendar which started 1/1/1752.

Old Style....................................new style

March................1st mo..............January
April................2d mo...............February

A Genealogy Tool – The Graving Kit

The following was published previously in Looking 4 Kin Newsletter by fishing ( a chatter in Looking 4 Kin Genealogy Chat)

A Genealogy Tool – The Graving Kit

I am no longer quite sure how the idea of developing a Graving Kit became a reality. It started off as a bit of a joke, but the idea was based on some previous experiences and the knowledge that on the day that the idea moved past the talking stage into an actual kit, four of us were just starting out to visit several cemeteries.

What is a Graving Kit?

To answer that, think about how many cemeteries you have visited and found the individual sites of your kin to be in a condition less than satisfactory. Even if the cemeteries are regularly tended, individual graves usually need some attention. Why not do a little maintenance while you are there?

There are any number of ways you can develop your kit and any number of items that can be included. Here’s what we did. We made up a list of what we thought should be the basic tools, keeping in mind that the kit needed to be portable and practical and then made our first stop at a Thrift Store. What we couldn’t find there we supplemented by a visit to other stores and from home supplies.

Kit Inventory

Packsack, small, well constructed.
Spray bottle(plastic)
Glass/Tile scraper plus spare blades
Trowel, small, pointed
Knife, 4” blade
Grass trimmer (hand size)
Clippers(twigs and small branches)
Brush ( medium bristles)
Whisk broom
Water container
Bleach (mixed weak)
Chalk (different colors)
Hand cleaner
Rags
Measuring Tape
Sketch Book
Pencils

And of course a camera. If you can you should have both a digital and a conventional camera.

There may be some question as to the last 3 items . In some of the older cemeteries, particularly those which are on private property, some of the family plot lines have deteriorated and some of the information on the stones is hard to read due to deterioration. It is good to try and redefine the boundries, make a rough sketch and write in what information is still legible.

One reminder, be careful while doing your cleanup! Weather and time take their toll on all of these sites, you don’t want to accelerate natures processes.

Yesterdays Journey

As per site: Yesterdays Journey

"As in any age, people have had to deal with documentation and Officials whether it be for good or bad. Yesterdays Journey records the names of those people who had dealings with those events and the paperwork involved. The documents that sent them back to their legal settlement or let them stay in a new parish. The warrants for their arrest, or the Indentures that gave them a start in working life and the papers that named the fathers of illegitimate children, or the Wills that folks left. They are all here.

Documents that may identify where they were born, a trade, an employer, their wages, how long they worked with for each person. Where they got married, which regiment they served in, how many children they had, names, ages and other bits of information to help add real history and detail to your ancestors lives.

Dealing primarily with Derbyshire it does however cover the whole of the British Isles as people moved around seeking work, travelled as vagrants through the County or were chased throughout the realm as the responsibility of fatherhood and law caught up with them. There are references to Canada, Australia, New Zealand and America, as well as other lands overseas, as some moved further afield.

Yesterdays Journey is on-going and updated on a regular basis. "

Lower Canada Land Petitions

"When New France became a British colony in 1763, the land system changed. New lands were now granted as part of townships instead of seigneuries. Many early settlers, both military and civilian, submitted petitions to the Governor to obtain Crown land. The Lower Canada Land Petitions contain petitions for grants or leases of land and other administrative records. This research tool provides access to more than 95,000 references to individuals who lived in present-day Quebec between 1764 and 1841."

Good Morning Everyone

I have updated the chat with the firewall friendly module after finding that at least one chatter was having a problem getting in after I renewed this year, also had to renew the chat for a 1 year period in order to get the firewall friendly setup. So people please don't let me down this year, it is a lot of money for a chat that wasn't busy a good part of last year.

Our chat list is much shorter today as I have gone through the registered people and deleted several who had not been in for a long time and also deleted any who's email addresses are invalid, and the duplicate logins.

Duncan & Mandy's Wiltshire Website

As per their website:

"We began taking photographs of Wiltshire churches in 1998 when we started researching our own family history. As our collection of photographs grew we started a website so other people could also see these beautiful buildings and, perhaps for the first time, experience where their own ancestors had been baptized, married or buried. An encounter with Johns Aubrey and Jackson's 'Wiltshire Collections' book further encouraged us to photograph these buildings, including memorials and gravestones, to preserve their detail for future generations before time and weather erodes them further.

Our church website now has over 2,200 pages, containing over 27,800 photographs of 185 mostly Wiltshire churches. We have recorded every name that appears on every photograph and you can view the alphabetical indexes which will guide you to the relevant page."

Please help me save a days work by letting me know who you are, and deciding which log in name you want to use. There is no need to use 2 names in the chat.

See you in chat
