Lookin4kin Chat Contest

Hi all This is my first try at doing a blog. So kindly bear with me.

I have some great news to pass on.

We are going to have a contest for everyone who uses the chat room. Starting on Sunday April 6, 2008 and to run for 4 weeks ending on Saturday May 3, 2008.

There will be a special prize for the WINNER.

This is how the contest is going to be run:
log into the chat room at least 5 times in each of the next 4 weeks and stay actively involved in the chat for 30 minutes and you get 1 entry into the draw. Do it for all 4 weeks and you get 4 entries into the draw. -at the end of the 4 weeks all entries will be put into the hat and a winner drawn.

Good luck to everyone and make sure that you get all 4 entries !

The contest is open to all chatters, new and old alike so invite your friends and relatives to join us and be part of our contest.

As you all know by now that M will be away most of the time for the next week or so; but lets keep her busy checking the traffic in the room to see who qualifies for an entry each week. I know that lots of traffic in the room will really lift her spirits.

So come on into the chat room qualify for the contest and have a great time with your family history.

Looking 4 Kin Chat

By the number of emails I am getting, it seems that many of you are forgetting that you need to log into chat at least once a month to keep your chat account open. Logging into chat does not mean simply that - you need to hang around a bit and chat, or at the very least post your names and wait a moment to see if anyone can connect. Having a chat account that you do not use to chat just does not make any sense.

Many of you will need to register again as I was not up to sending out the reminder last week.

You also must sign up for the blog to have your account stay active in the chat room.

If you can't log into chat try regestering your name again.

Registering for the Genealogy Chatroom

1. Go to Looking 4 Kin Genealogy Chat

2. Click on Create A New Account on the chat square or go to Register New Account

Registering for the Blog

Go to Looking 4 Kin Genealogy Blog and enter your email address.

1916 Census transferred to Library and Archives Canada

Gordon Watts reports on his site The Global Gazette

"On 2 January 2008 Statistics Canada transferred schedules of the 1916 Census of Population for Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba to Library and Archives Canada. As the effective date for that Census was 1 June 1916 it is expected that shortly after 1 June 2008 these records should be made available for public access. What form that access will take is up in the air at the moment. "

Gordon Watts does a great job of keeping us up to date on Canadian issues. Be sure to read the rest of the article at The Global Gazette.

Looking 4 Kin Chat

Hi all

Wow - two blogs from me in a little over a week - you lucky people !!!

Seriously though, today I have a different type of message to bring to you, as I have noticed a drop in numbers in the room recently.

As you will all know, Just_M will be away from chat for extended periods at the moment.

It is at this time that she must rely on all chatters, and especially the helpers, to be in the room as much as possible to meet and greet newcomers, and ensure that everything runs smoothly.

I realise that you all have lots on your plate, I for one work full time so it is not possible for me to be in the room for long stretches. If, however, we can all log on for short periods when we have a free moment we can make sure the room is manned as much as possible.

I have been a member of Looking 4 Kin chat (and previously JustGen) for over 7 years now and I have seen the ups and the downs ... a lot of you won't have been around last year but I can confirm Just_M's comments - the room went through a bad time when she could not be around.

So ....

Let's not let the room go through bad times again - let's make sure that it stays lively and open for the purpose it was meant, as shown in the goal set many years ago -

To provide for you an active, caring genealogy chat room in which all with an interest in genealogy feel welcome for sharing knowledge, resources, ideas & making of friendships.

To provide worldwide genealogy resources & weblinks to make tracing your family history online easier.

Any of you who come from the UK and are of a 'certain age' will remember the end of the ITN 10 o'clock news each evening, and the wee 'and finally' piece - today I have my own.

AND FINALLY ...

A number of chatters will have received e mails denigrating Just_M and the work done in the room. As one of the longest standing chatters (how has she put up with me?) I would like to say ...

Just_M deserves every respect for the work she has done over the years, setting up and running Looking 4 Kin Links and Chat and, on a slightly smaller scale before that, JustGen. Her work is a labour of love and a desire to help other people as much as possible.

When I first joined the chat I hadn't a clue about online genealogy and the resourses available, but with the patience of Just_M and other chatters in the room I was soon in a position to begin to help others.

Long may the work continue !!

See you in chat,
Rosey

Hugh Wallis's Genealogical Web Sites

IGI Batch Numbers - British Isles and North America

Hugh Wallis Says:

"I have often wondered if all the batches were present and I have found that manually typing the batch numbers into the IGI search screen can be tedious. I therefore decided to make an exhaustive search of the likely ranges of batch numbers and create a database of those numbers and the source records that they apply to. I have searched all the possible numbers in the ranges shown below. For each batch I extracted the church or chapel (if specified), town, county and country names of the first record that appears when it is called up in my browser. I then organised them by country and county and created this website. A very powerful feature that I have included is a hotlink from each batch number to the actual search engine provided at http://www.familysearch.org, including the ability to enter the surname you are looking for. This makes it very easy to search all the batches for a particular geographic location using just the last name you are searching for - something that is not possible directly from the LDS site without doing a lot of typing."

IGI Middle Name indexes

Hugh has also created middle name indexes from the IGI for all English and Scottish counties as listed below. To do this he extracted the relevant records from the batches listed on the relevant county page from my IGI Batch number site and indexed them by middle name.

He also has the Stoke Damerel (Devon) On Line Parish Clerk (OPC) site

Looking 4 Kin Genealogy Chat

You will notice a new RED HEAD in chat over the next month or two. Due to some issues I am going to be forced to be away a good part of the time.

Drop in and meet the new admin. She will not be able to be there all the time because she is a full time student and works 5 evenings a week. So I am asking you chatters to all chip in and spend the time that you can there.

Last year when I went through this the chat almost died out completely, please don't let this happen again.

I will be in as I can.

Thanks

Until Wednesday March 26th LostCousins is completely FREE!

Although I have not yet tried this site I am hearing good reports.

In an email they say:

"Until Wednesday March 26th LostCousins is completely FREE!

It's a superb opportunity for you to link up with other researchers who share your interests and can help you learn more about your family history - because there will be 10 times as many people visiting the LostCousins website over the Easter weekend."

They say on their site:

"LostCousins is the ONLY family history site able to match you with cousins researching the same ancestors
AUTOMATICALLY, ACCURATELY & CONFIDENTIALLY

Simply enter the relatives on your family tree who were recorded on the US, Canadian, or British Census - then click the Search button!

Our automated matching is close to 100% accurate, so nobody else needs to see your information - and when you do find a 'lost cousin', you can be certain you're related!

Find living relatives and useful connections
When you find a 'lost cousin' you can share family photos and stories that have been passed down the generations - things you'll never find in public records offices and archives.

As well as sharing existing knowledge about your family tree you can co-operate on future research - after all, a problem shared is a problem halved!

But that's not all - at LostCousins you'll also make connections with people who, though not related to you, share the same research interests."

Looking 4 Kin

Most of you are unaware the chat room at Looking 4 Kin is the smallest page on our site. Yet through the years some of my very closest friends have been made on this little page. I know that most of the regular users feel the same about the friendships they have formed and the bonds they have made there.

In Looking 4 Kin Genealogy Chat are not about numbers in the room - that is the least of our worries. We would rather have 8 or 10 good chatters then a bunch who are not on track.

What we want out of the room is a nice, small but friendly group of chatters. The way it has been is perfect, but we never want to see the numbers drop to where they were last fall.

Yes, we will always welcome chatters into the room but it is not our goal to have 20 or 30 in the room at a time.

When the numbers get to high chatting becomes difficult and hard to follow. Bigger isn't always better. Quality not Quantity is by far the best.

Our Goal - To provide for you an active, caring genealogy chat room in which all with an interest in genealogy feel welcome for sharing knowledge, resources, ideas & making of friendships. Our goal has nothing to do with recruiting large numbers of chatters, instead we desire to have your friends and family there.

Most of my free time is spent working on the other 500 plus pages and on my own family history pages.

Looking 4 Kin is not just about a chat room or links, we have message boards, articles, a blog and so much more to offer people.

Census Tips

Finding your way around a census can be very frustrating, especially if you have a set idea in your mind of what you expect to find.

If, on the other hand, you make allowances for mistakes that might have occurred, especially in earlier censuses where many of our ancestors would have been illiterate, then your time looking though the census can be very rewarding.

Always think of the following –

• The census taker would write down what he heard – so what was said might not be what ended up on the census sheet.

• Accents can be a problem – our ancestors may have moved from a different state and had a heavy accent which confused the census taker.

• The census taker might have a set way to spell a name – if our ancestors were illiterate they would not be able to correct the census taker.

• Our ancestors could have moved without telling us! – just because great great grandad was born and died in a particular state, it doesn’t mean he lived in that state all his life.

Here are some examples I have found –

• Julius SMITH – shown on the census as Juliu S SMITH

• Jefferson WOLFORD – shown on the census as Jefferson WOOLFORD

• Rebecca – shown on the census as Rebeka

Another thing to remember is that the census takers would not have had whiteout, so if they made a mistake all they could do was scribble over it. That could leave little or no space for the actual name to be written. If you can’t find someone, look for other members of the household – they might hold the key to unlock the scribble.

So, the lesson is –

• Don’t be afraid to be adventurous, play around with the spelling of names

• Even if it looks like a family is not in the right place, read the whole census entry, checking for places of birth, ages etc.

• Make notes and cross check against other censuses or documents you have on the family.

If you come across a family which is intact and all correct except for the odd spelling mistake, or a strange location at the time of the census, you probably have a match. It will be necessary for you to look at other censuses and available documents to follow the trail and prove your theory, but you could be well on the way to breaking down that brickwall.

Happy hunting!

Why just relying on the web for research is not enough

I can say from personal experience that much needed information is not on the web, but is available in old family histories, old town histories, old cemeteries and small libraries as well as knowledge that is only available from personal or web contact.

I recently found a large amount of history about my MAY, BURRINGTON and THOMPSON ancestors from discussions with others who pointed me to new sources of information and in some cases provided me access to rare books they owned. Much of this info was not on the web or was on the web only as fragments without documentation of any type.

Of course vital records many of which are either not online or online only as transcribed summaries are still the best source of documented information.

Some information like there are "THOMPSON" family stones in old Cemetery for 1800's in an area I was not aware of the family having been in are personnel knowledge of others. Some of my New England ancestors moved often and the children also moved to various areas. This makes it easy to loss track of branches and chunks of time in tracking family connections.

I have visited some of these cemeteries in areas new to my research and found that yes it appears that my Ancestors were in the area. In others it seems to be an unrelated family with one of my surnames.

Research in old Cemeteries that have stones for family members has the added bonus of turning up unknown siblings and even additional spouses of family members. You may also find the maiden names of wives in some cases and even some info on the spouses family.

In short assuming that everything you need for genealogy research is online is doing yourself a disservice.

Happy St Patrick's Day

Beannachtaí na Féile Pádraig oraibh!

Happy St Patrick’s Day to you all!

Just_M has asked me to give you an item on St Patrick's Day. As far as I am aware, I don't have an ounce of Irish blood in my veins, but perhaps the fact that I live in Northern Ireland gives me the necessary credentials.

A few blogs recently have dealt with Ireland, so I will be a bit more general in my approach and, in the eyes of some people, a bit controversial!!

OK – based on information found on the internet, what do we know about St Patrick?

He was born in -

England (Cumbria)
England (Somerset)
France
Scotland
Wales

The year of his birth was in or around -

337 AD
337 – 340 AD
373 AD
385 AD
between 387 - 390 AD
415 AD

The year of his death was in or around -

454
17 March 460
17 March 461
between the year 460 and 490
somewhere between AD 463 and AD 493
493

He lived to be –

88 years old
120 years old

He died in -

Saul, Downpatrick
Glastonbury, England

Right - we have numerous birthplaces, dates of birth, dates of death and places of death, and that is from a brief search of the internet – there are probably many more answers to the questions posed.

Where does this lead us?

It leads us nowhere – everything that is written about St Patrick is, to a certain extent, conjecture.

I think it is certain that the individual now known as St Patrick was an actual person (unlike King Arthur in England, where the majority of writings are made up of myth and legend). However, we will never know exactly who he was or when he lived.

Now let’s relate this to our family trees.

Do you think you can trace YOUR tree back to Adam & Eve? If so, think again ... if the history of a person like St Patrick cannot be traced with any accuracy, how on earth can you say that you have the family back to ‘day one’? And, when exactly was ‘day one’?

Consider these points -

Have you never hit the problem where, in the church records of a particular area, two people have the same name?

How do you follow the family prior to the existence of church records?

What happens earlier when surnames were not used? – In England, it was not until the reign of Edward II (1307 - 1327) that the practise of using surnames became general.

How do you follow the family from one country (or continent) to another? – There were no such things as ship’s list back then.

So, if you still subscribe to the ‘I am back to Adam & Eve’ theory, look at your ancestors again – check the verifiable information – it is unlikely that the majority of people in the UK can get back past the beginning of church records in 1538, let alone anywhere near Adam & Eve, where it is necessary to chart them through numerous countries!

South Carolina Genealogy there are pages for each county in addition to blog style posts. The County resource pages are probably the highest traffic section at this point with the onsite resources, information and links to census data, marriage/birth death information or other items relevant to each county.

In coordination with the above, there are Query forums at

I wish to thank the webmaster of "the other place" for his email, and his assurance that he will work with us on with the trouble we have been having.

As I stated in an earlier blog - I was sure the webmaster of that site had nothing to do with the unethical recruting that was going on, nor the problems being caused by an angry chatter who had been banned from the chat for failure of following the rules.

As for the slogan he will be removing it. I accept his explaination of how it got to be used.

For the past three years we have shared so many chatters without any problems whatsoever, we can't let 1 or 2 trouble makers ruin it. We are totally different and have and can continue to share chatters. But our rule still stands and always will that no other chats will be discussed (had that rule been followed we wouldn't have all the problems we have at the moment)

No hard feelings are held whatsoever towards "the other place" it was not "the other place" or the majority of users there. The problem was with 1 or 2 not following a simple rule. I have never been there but I am positive it is a good place to be or our good chatters wouldn't use both.

To the webmaster of "the other place" I truly hope that no damage was done to your website by anything posted here. That was not my intention. Keep up your good work, we will do the same and we can share - right?

Now hopefully with the problem removed we can get back to what we do best - Genealogy and chatting and having fun doing it.

Genealogy Chat

After all the big pushing we have had re: "the other place", I decided yesterday to check the web site out, just for the heck of it.

Upon landing on the main page what do I see - Oh my it can't be - a set of rules page. Not a whole lot different then ours or most chats would have. Oh yes and they are missing one rule we have.

I then check out the trivia information page - looks interesting.

Then the shocker of all shockers as I check out the Schedueled Chats page. I find at the top of this page the following phrase "WELCOME!!! This is an active & caring GENEALOGY chat with those who have an interest in genealogy. Our chatters feel welcome for sharing knowledge, resources, tips and making friendships. They will do look ups, provide genealogy resources and web sites to make tracing your family tree online easier. We hope you enjoy your visit. Good Luck!!!"

Can't help but wonder how different it is from what they lifted on Looking 4 Kin where we state - "Our Goal
To provide for you an active, caring genealogy chat room in which all with an interest in genealogy feel welcome for sharing knowledge, resources, ideas & making of friendships.

To provide worldwide genealogy resources & weblinks to make tracing your family history online easier.

Good Luck!!
&
Come back soon.
"

For those again who are doubters that this could be true that they would steal almost word for word what is on our website - you can use the internet archives page and search for http://www.looking4kin.com/ . If you want to take the search one step further you can search our site under the old name also.

One thing though lol - We must be doing something right or there wouldn't be the need to try and be like us, and to take the words right out of our mouths (so to speak).

Looking 4 Kin Genealogy Chat

For all those chatters who's email address were farmed and used in a ploy to rundown and degrade our chat and myself, and for unethical recruitment tactics to another chat room, I do appologize.

Please be advised that the users kdskin (Gerald) and tobieporter (T.P.) are now banned from our chat. I am of the firm belief that what goes around comes around and this will come around and bite kdskin and tobieporter in the butt.

For those chatters who believe the no other chat room rule is new and has to do with me not wanting anyone hearing about the other chat room please use Internet Archive and check the page http://www.looking4kin.com/guide.htm in it. The earliest entry they have for that page with that rule in place is Jan 15, 2005.

We are not stupid people in the chat room and we do know how to search in the search engines (that is most likely how we found Looking 4 Kin Chat). That rule was put in place to prevent exactly the foolishness that has been going on. You are all free people to spend your time where and when you want online.

With that said, what a great day we had in Looking 4 Kin Chat yesterday. Two brand new chatters made a connection yesterday in our room and are busy exchanging information. And Bev made Andemaiar's day.

RootsWeb's Moving to Ancestry Site

"Posted March 13th, 2008 by Tim at RootsWeb Newsroom

As you know, The Generations Network has hosted and funded the RootsWeb online community since June 2000, thereby maintaining RootsWeb as the world’s oldest and largest free genealogy website. TGN remains committed to this mission and believes that RootsWeb is an absolutely invaluable and complementary resource to Ancestry.com, our flagship commercial family history site. We believe in both services and want to see both communities prosper and grow.

As part of this goal, we have decided to “transplant” RootsWeb onto the Ancestry.com domain beginning next week. This move will not change the RootsWeb experience or alter the ease of navigation to or within RootsWeb. RootsWeb will remain a free online experience. What will be different is that the Web address for all RootsWeb pages will change from www.rootsweb.com to www.rootsweb.ancestry.com. Again, the RootsWeb experience is not changing.

The decision to host RootsWeb on Ancestry.com is being made for one primary reason: we believe that the users of each of our two main websites can be better served if they have access to the best services available on both. Simply stated, we want to introduce more Ancestry.com users to RootsWeb and vice versa.

Today, despite the fact that Ancestry.com and RootsWeb.com are the two most frequently visited family history sites on the Web, only 25 percent of visitors to Ancestry.com visited RootsWeb in January 2008, while only 20 percent of visitors to RootsWeb visited Ancestry.com (according to Comscore Media Metrix). We think we will serve our users best by doing a better job of letting them know what is available on both Ancestry.com and RootsWeb. Hosting RootsWeb on Ancestry.com is the first step towards making this happen, but we will absolutely look for more and better ways down the road to advance this goal.

Hosting RootsWeb on Ancestry.com will also make it easier for us to make changes and improvements to the RootsWeb experience in the future.

All old RootsWeb URLs will continue to work, whether they are bookmarks or favorites, links to or from a hosted page or URLs manually typed in your Internet browser. We will have a redirect in place so that all old URLs will automatically end up on the appropriate new RootsWeb URL. You will never need to update your old favorites or links unless you want to. We have worked to make the transition as seamless as possible for our users, and this change should have a minimal impact on your experience with the site.

RootsWeb will remain a free online experience dedicated to providing you with a place where our community can find their roots together. If you have questions regarding this change please email them to feedback@rootsweb.com.

Thanks,

Tim Sullivan
CEO
The Generations Network, Inc. "

Random Acts Of Genealogical Kindness

The following article written by Teach was previously run in one of our newletters

What Can I Do?

You’ve just been in the Looking 4 kin genealogy chat room and, with the help of the moderators and other chatters, you have had a brickwall broken down. You have received some copies of census records or a list of passengers off a ship that relates to your family.

You want to thank those people who have helped you, but you think, “What can I offer to do to help them? They already have all the resources that I have.” Maybe as well as helping any new Looking 4 kin chatters, you could help other people around the world who have an interest in the area where you live.

Perhaps you live near a county record office or a parish church or even close to a cemetery. You could offer to check records at that office or take photos of headstones at that cemetery. You might not help those people who helped you, but you could certainly help someone else who can’t get to your part of the world.

There is an organization on the net you could join called RAOGK. Random Acts Of Genealogical Kindness. Check out their pages and see what other people have volunteered to do in their area.

Discovering Family History Magazine - Free Download

This looks like a great new magazine, that I plan on subscribing to.

As per their website:

"Welcome to Discovering Family History, the latest magazine from the publishers of Family Chronicle, Internet Genealogy and History Magazine. This new bi-monthly magazine is targeted at people who are starting their genealogy, need a refresher course or are tackling a new aspect of genealogy.

Discovering Family History articles are being written by some of the most respected book and magazine authors and many of them have extensive experience of teaching genealogy courses, either face-to-face or online.

Even if you have been conducting your genealogy research for many years, you may want to take a look at what Discovering Family History has to offer: as you get more and more into your family history, you will find the need to investigate resources that are completely new to you. Discovering Family History can help.

To be published six times a year, the first issue of Discovering Family History will be dated May/June 2008 and will be on newsstands in April. Until then we invite you to download the complete 56-page preview issue FREE with no obligation. See instructions on download page."

Looking 4 Kin Genealogy Chat

I just wanted to draw to everyone's attention the writing in red at the top of Looking 4 Kin Chat

Lately we have 8 or 10 in the chat who are pushing another chat. This is not allowed.

We don't care who uses what chats, but in our chat NO OTHER may ever be mentioned.

If we keep loosing chatters to the other chats then we are all wasting our time and I am wasting my money paying for a chat and I may as well just delete the chat page.

But that won't be happening - so I will say if you plan on promoting another chat in Looking 4 Kin then don't bother entering the room - stay in the other one and forget about us.

Otherwise see you in Looking 4 Kin Genealogy Chat
