Chat

As those in the room last night noticed - we had a full house twice. How wonderful to see that.

When people come in the room could you all please make sure that they are greeted and asked how their research is going, or who they are researching, or if they need help. We want everyone to feel welcome in the room and sometimes when the crowd gets bigger that does not happen (Not that we intend to make it seem that way) Or the person entering may feel shy and intimidated by the numbers.

The contest is picking up again. Remember you get one entry this week for each url that you submit that is not on Looking 4 Kin main site. You may post as many as you wish. remember also that you loose and entry if it is already there so check the pages out 1st before submitting.

Good Luck All

Please if you enjoy the room, have ever got help there, or enjoy helping others - we need you in the chat when you have time to be there, and we need you telling others about us.

And The Contest Continues

WBruce chose Legacy Deluxe 07- as his prize and has been playing with his new toy.

It appears that we have dropped to only 6 taking part in the June contest now. Legacy Deluxe 07 is the prize this month - but if you have a genealogy program that you don't wish to change from, I do have alternate prizes in mind.

The contest is very easy this week:

Part 1:

You asked to post at least 2 new free sites to the Regular Chatter's Message Board, under the June Contest 7th thru 14th section. (These must be free sites that are not posted on Looking 4 Kin - so have a look at the sections of the site that you are bringing the link for). Be sure to tell me where on Looking 4 Kin these links belong.

You will get an entry in the draw for each site you post - but you will lose one if it is already posted on the main site at Looking 4 Kin.

Part 2: Log into chat and actively try to help someone 3 times this week for a minimum of 15 minutes.

Please if you enjoy the room, have ever got help there, or enjoy helping others - we need you in the chat when you have time to be there.

Part 1: I have just spent over a week checking links on Looking 4 Kin - the main pages.

Week 2 you are being asked to post at least 2 new free sites to the Regular Chatter's Message Board, under the June Contest 7th thru 14th section. (These must be free sites that are not posted on Looking 4 Kin - so have a look at the sections of the site that you are bringing the link for). May Quiz Answers

Hi all

As promised, here are the answers to the May quiz ....

1 - Austin

2 - 212 Southampton Street, Reading St Giles, Berkshire, England - Laborer in tin factory

Here I split the point between the address and the occupation - half a point for each answer that was exactly right

3 - 12 December 1877 in Fenelon Township, Victoria County, Ontario, Canada

4 - 77 Murray St, HOBART, TASMANIA 7000 - Telephone: 03 6233 7488

5 - Maggie - Decendents of Harald Sundre (or Lander) Hansen

6 - 1841 1851 1861 1871 1881 1891 1901

7 - James & Jemima

8 - 28 September 1912

I understand a number of you didn't know what PRONI was - I would like to say that I put it in to keep you on your toes, but the truth is that in Ireland the site is never really given its full title, and I forgot when I set the questions

9 -To provide for you an active, caring genealogy chat room in which all with an interest in genealogy feel welcome for sharing knowledge, resources, ideas & making of friendships.

To provide worldwide genealogy resources & weblinks to make tracing your family history online easier.

Here again I split the point - half a point for each part of the goal - it is surprising how many of you just showed the first half

10 - Woodstock

More than one gave the answer Blenheim - the registration district for that area is Woodstock

11 - Lawyer

12 - British Columbia Death Registration Index (1872 - 1987)

13 - 22nd March 1900

14 - 8

Those who said 6 states and 2 territories got full marks - pity I couldn't give you a bonus !!

15 - Left Liverpool on 30 March 1860 aboard The Underwriter

16 - John Chrystie - age 57
Elspet Chrystie (Mrs) - age 59
John M Chrystie - age 15
Margaret Chrystie - age 12
Margaret Chrystie - age 9

The question didn't call for John Chrystie's name - but you got full marks whether you gave it or not

17 - Age - 13 Sentence - transportation for 7 years

18 - SAL

19 - Programs & Software

20 - The first Ellis Island Immigration Station was officially opened. The first immigrant to pass through Ellis was a "rosy-cheeked Irish girl," Annie Moore, age 15, from County Cork. She came with her two younger brothers to join their parents in New York City. That first day, three large ships were waiting to land, and 700 immigrants passed through Ellis Island. In the first year, nearly 450,000 immigrants passed through the Island.

21 - 7th June at 7pm

22 - Service Number - PA4189 Date of Birth - 1 May 1924

23 - 14 May 1922 Cemetery in Bromley Cemetery

24 - Ardross - a small community in Easter Ross in the Northern Highlands, about 23 miles north of Inverness. The village is spread out over a large area and consists of a number of distinct small clusters of houses in the townships of Ardross, Easter Ardross, Dalnavie, Stittenham, Cuillich, Strathy and Achandunie. You will find Ardross on the B9176 (formerly the A836) that runs between the Cromarty Firth and the Dornoch Firth, a road often used as a scenic detour for tourists travelling the east coast of Scotland, and signposted as the "Moray Firth Tourist Route".

25 - Registration district - Llanfyllin and County - Montgomeryshire

It is surprising how many people only answered half of this question, getting the counry but not the registration district. In fact I checked the question twice to make sure that I had asked for both parts

26 - I checked the message board for websites/names posted

27 - www.wyatt-family.com/sue

28 - 10 October 2004

May Quiz Result / June Contest

Hi all

MAY QUIZ

All the answers have been checked and I can announce that there was just one entrant who had everything right.

The winner of the May quiz was WBruce - well done !!

Thanks everyone who took part - we had a good number of entries and I was impressed with the standard, most people had almost everything right and I had to be very ruthless in my marking, giving half points where there were obvious mistakes in part of the 'two part' answers, but giving allowance for typos.

I will post a blog tomorrow with all the answers and a few points (mentioning no names) as to where people went wrong.

JUNE CONTEST

A reminder regarding the 1st week

What you will need to do during week 1 is:

1. Post 1 brickwall, as detailed as possible, in the Regular Chatter's Surnames & WebSites under the June BrickWall Section and copy and paste that same message into the Brickwall Message Board (under country you are looking in) on the main part of Looking 4 Kin. (This must be something within reason not someone who we would have no resources to try and help you)

2. You must check the posting and reply to anyone who responds to your post.

3. Stop into the chatroom for at least 15 Minutes three times this week (with summer we know you are busier) to further discuss this, or try to help others.

You will get an entry:

1. For your posting.

2. For each person you try to help anywhere on the Regular Chatter's Surnames & WebSites Message Board or the Brickwall Message Board on the main part of Looking 4 Kin.

Some Pointers/Suggestions

I saw there was one comment on the blog about not being able to find the Regular Chatter's Surnames and Websites Links ... M's reply was as follows ...

You will find this below the chat room on the chat page.

Once registered there you will see June Brickwall near the top section of the message board.

If you have more probs just ask

Next ...

Remember

1 - You must post your entries in both the 'regular chatter's June brickwall section' (mentioned above) and the brickwall forum which you will find in the main links.

2 - If you have posted a brickwall in the past, don't worry ... update it a wee bit as necessary and copy/paste the result into the regular chatter's section - you are not expected to come up with a completely new request.

Hint - if you copy your old post before deleting and reposting it, your new posting will come out at the top of the pile. (If you have problems with this have a word with Just_M in chat or send an e mail to Just_M through the 'contact me' section on the links pages).

3 - Make sure you give enough information - It is no good saying 'I am looking for SMITH in London England' - you stand no chance of getting any help at all ... give all the information you know including ...

Who you are looking for
Where they lived (or where the family was last seen in records)
When, approximately, they lived
and
What information you are hoping to find

For further information take a look at http://looking4kinchat.proboards66.com/index.cgi?board=1&action=display&thread=196

I hope you all take the opportunity of making a post - you never know, that brickwall might come tumbling down !!
