Well it is happening again, the room is slowing. I know spring is in the air and we are out enjoying it but come on chatters get in there even for short periods while checking your email or surfing.

Hi all

Wow - two blogs from me in a little over a week - you lucky people !!!

Seriously though, today I have a different type of message to bring to you, as I have noticed a drop in numbers in the room recently.

As you will all know, Just_M will be away from chat for extended periods at the moment.

It is at this time that she must rely on all chatters, and especially the helpers, to be in the room as much as possible to meet and greet newcomers, and ensure that everything runs smoothly.

I realise that you all have lots on your plate, I for one work full time so it is not possible for me to be in the room for long stretches. If, however, we can all log on for short periods when we have a free moment we can make sure the room is manned as much as possible.

I have been a member of Looking 4 Kin chat (and previously JustGen) for over 7 years now and I have seen the ups and the downs ... a lot of you won't have been around last year but I can confirm Just_M's comments - the room went through a bad time when she could not be around.

So ....

Let's not let the room go through bad times again - let's make sure that it stays lively and open for the purpose it was meant, as shown in the goal set many years ago -

To provide for you an active, caring genealogy chat room in which all with an interest in genealogy feel welcome for sharing knowledge, resources, ideas & making of friendships.

Any of you who come from the UK and are of a 'certain age' will remember the end of the ITN 10 o'clock news each evening, and the wee 'and finally' piece - today I have my own.

A number of chatters will have received e mails denigrating Just_M and the work done in the room. As one of the longest standing chatters (how has she put up with me?) I would like to say ...

Just_M deserves every respect for the work she has done over the years, setting up and running Looking 4 Kin Links and Chat and, on a slightly smaller scale before that, JustGen. Her work is a labour of love and a desire to help other people as much as possible.

When I first joined the chat I hadn't a clue about online genealogy and the resourses available, but with the patience of Just_M and other chatters in the room I was soon in a position to begin to help others.

Long may the work continue !!

I wish to thank the webmaster of "the other place" for his email, and his assurance that he will work with us on with the trouble we have been having.

As I stated in an earlier blog - I was sure the webmaster of that site had nothing to do with the unethical recruting that was going on, nor the problems being caused by an angry chatter who had been banned from the chat for failure of following the rules.

As for the slogan he will be removing it. I accept his explaination of how it got to be used.

For the past three years we have shared so many chatters without any problems whatsoever, we can't let 1 or 2 trouble makers ruin it. We are totally different and have and can continue to share chatters. But our rule still stands and always will that no other chats will be discussed (had that rule been followed we wouldn't have all the problems we have at the moment)

No hard feelings are held whatsoever towards "the other place" it was not "the other place" or the majority of users there. The problem was with 1 or 2 not following a simple rule. I have never been there but I am positive it is a good place to be or our good chatters wouldn't use both.

To the webmaster of "the other place" I truly hope that no damage was done to your website by anything posted here. That was not my intention. Keep up your good work, we will do the same and we can share - right?

Now hopefully with the problem removed we can get back to what we do best - Genealogy and chatting and having fun doing it.

After all the big pushing we have had re: "the other place", I decided yesterday to check the web site out, just for the heck of it.

Upon landing on the main page what do I see - Oh my it can't be - a set of rules page. Not a whole lot different then ours or most chats would have. Oh yes and they are missing one rule we have.

I then check out the trivia information page - looks interesting.

Then the shocker of all shockers as I check out the Schedueled Chats page. I find at the top of this page the following phrase "WELCOME!!! This is an active & caring GENEALOGY chat with those who have an interest in genealogy. Our chatters feel welcome for sharing knowledge, resources, tips and making friendships. They will do look ups, provide genealogy resources and web sites to make tracing your family tree online easier. We hope you enjoy your visit. Good Luck!!!"

Can't help but wonder how different it is from what they lifted on Looking 4 Kin where we state - "Our Goal

For all those chatters who's email address were farmed and used in a ploy to rundown and degrade our chat and myself, and for unethical recruitment tactics to another chat room, I do appologize.

Please be advised that the users kdskin (Gerald) and tobieporter (T.P.) are now banned from our chat. I am of the firm belief that what goes around comes around and this will come around and bite kdskin and tobieporter in the butt.

For those chatters who believe the no other chat room rule is new and has to do with me not wanting anyone hearing about the other chat room please use Internet Archive and check the page http://www.looking4kin.com/guide.htm in it. The earliest entry they have for that page with that rule in place is Jan 15, 2005.

We are not stupid people in the chat room and we do know how to search in the search engines (that is most likely how we found Looking 4 Kin Chat). That rule was put in place to prevent exactly the foolishness that has been going on. You are all free people to spend your time where and when you want online.

General information

This Genealogy Chat Room is a place where people from all over the world can meet to discuss genealogy (family history), seek advice, exchange information and make new friends. You may even find your long lost cousins here, it has happened before.

You must log in to Looking 4 Kin chat every 30 days to keep your account open, after that you may loose your login name.

Upon entering the chat room
Please post your surnames in CAPS each time you enter the chat. Greet each person who enters the chat and post your names again. Use full names of places, North Dakota instead of ND. The chat is worldwide and we do not know all the abbreviations.

While in the chat room
Each person who enters the chat room is to be greeted by all in the room and asked what names they are researching. Each person in the room will post their names in CAPS everytime someone enters.

Chatters can very soon become friends. Regulars will know they have no common ancestry and the conversation will drift. While the focus of this chat room is genealogy, it is impossible to keep it 100 % genealogy and have a room that is friendly and that people will want to return to. What we need here is a happy medium. Genealogy chat but also keep in mind that when doing genealogy you learn lifestyles, culture, geography etc. Common sense is needed.

We have no problem with the chat straying from genealogy from time to time. But when different people enter the room IT IS EXPECTED that the chat will return to genealogy.

Need some help?
It is our hope that the room will always contain at least 2 helpers. These are easily recognized by the fact their names appear in blue in list.

Our helpers will have a good knowledge of this site and general genealogy. They are also here to protect chatters from unwelcome guests, or unsuitable language or subject. They are not here to police the good chatters. They are here to help. They are not here to make demands on, nor to do your research.

Genealogy Chat Room Rules
The chatroom is just like any other meeting place, club or association and as such we have rules.

There are not a lot of rules here, so please respect them. The following WILL NOT be tolerated:

Obscene language or profanity, be it full words or abbreviations.

Constant disruption of the chat.

Gossip.

Discussion of other chat rooms - good or bad.

Asking personal questions of chatters - example: age, sex.

Use of color, sounds, emotions and actions.

Posting of your website if it is a pay for service site.

This will prevent it from becoming "Just Another Chat Room".

PLEASE Don't complain if the chat is slow,
instead help us grow. The site is still in the baby stages. We are non commercial meaning we can't afford to buy top listings in search engines.

The chatroom has been much busier. Thank you all for talking the time to stop in as often as possible.

I see bigger and better things for Looking 4 Kin but I need your help.

There are some small things you can all help with:

Happy Holidays

I have been forced to be away from the chat and all of Looking 4 Kin for several months now.

If I don't get on before the holidays I wish all of you a wonderful holiday season and all the best in the New Year

On a different note- the chat room is almost dead now so a huge question arises DO I RENEW it for another year and sit there alone 90 % of the time when I can get on or do I give it up as a lost cause? If I give up the chat room then Looking 4 Kin website and all the message boards will also go.

I guess I will leave it up to the site users,if there is not more traffic in the chat I will be forced to give up as much as I know the chat is a great place to give and recieve help and a talk out our genealogy problems.

September Chat Contest

During the momth of September we want everyone to promote the chat by bringing friends in and introducing them to Looking 4 Kin Chat.

For each person you bring in you will recieve one entry for the prize. To enter you will need to email me at the address on the site and tell me who you brought to chat and the date. If your friend returns more then the one time they can also enter the draw.
