FreeBMD

Rosey’s Wednesday Blog

I thought I would review an old and trusted site from the UK. Many will be familiar with FreeBMD, but there is no harm in bringing it to the fore again. There are always people who may be new to genealogy or overseas researchers who are just dipping their toes into UK research, not to mention some of the more experienced UK researchers may not realise quite how much is now on the site.

1 - Where can I find FreeBMD?
FreeBMD

2 - What is it?
A project to put the birth, marriage and death register indexes for England and Wales online with free access to all researchers

3 - Is it complete?
No, this is an ongoing project by volunteers

4 - Updates
The database is updated regularly – the last update was on 14 August 2008

5 - How many records are online?
The database currently contains over 154 million records

6 - What years are covered?
Freebmd starts with the commencement of Civil Registration in 1837 and records are currently online up to up to the late 1920s

More details of the years covered can be found at –

Births
Marriages
Deaths

7 - How will the site help me?
Once the correct record has been found in the index, you can take a note of the reference number and the relevant certificate can be ordered

Remember, this site is being updated all the time, and you may need make regular visits to look for previously missing information.

The full indexes are available on Ancestry. Take a look in the archives for 10 February 2008 where you will find an article by Just_M about the England and Wales Civil Registration index information held on ancestry and what can be found on the actual certificates. If you have no luck with Freebmd and need a lookup, pop into chat as quite a few chatters have access to the UK section of Ancestry and can give you a hand.

That only leaves me to say – I seem to be the only person who has answered the request for help with the blogs. From the list of current chatters I see that there are a number of people who have been part of chat/Looking 4 Kin for a long time. You don’t need to write a lot ... an interesting website, a tip/hint that might help others, anything will do as long it has a family history theme.

And finally ...
