The Do's and Dont's of Genealogy Research

By: Marie Christianson

When it comes to genealogy research, there are a number of dos and don'ts you should keep in mind in order to guarantee the best results.

Do: Take the Time to Talk to Living Relatives

One common mistake many people make when doing genealogy research is forgetting to talk to those relatives that are still living. It is easy to get caught up in all of the researching and sorting through old records with the intent of catching up with living relatives later, only to discover that later never comes.

Genealogy research is very interesting and it is fun to learn more about your past relatives. Don't forget that your living relatives have many wonderful anecdotes as well. In addition, they have a great deal of insight to add to your research. For this reason, talking to your living relatives should be one of your top priorities.

If it is impossible for you to personally visit with a living relative, you might want to consider sending a memory book to the relative and asking him or her to fill the book with stories. Not only will this help you gain valuable insight, it can also make a marvelous memento.

Don't: Trust Everything You Read

Remember: just because it is in print, it doesn't mean it is true. In fact, it is actually quite easy to publish information. This is particularly true when it comes to researchers publishing information they have uncovered while exploring the mysteries of genealogy. Never assume this information is accurate. Instead, use it as a jumping block toward completing your own research.

Keep in mind that most printed histories do contain at least one or two small errors. Census, will, cemetery, and courthouse transcriptions may also contain errors such as missing information or make their own incorrect assumptions. The same holds true for printed information on the Internet.

Do: Avoid Blanket Family Histories

There are many companies out there that are willing to provide you with "everything you need to know" about your family surname. These generic family histories are not an accurate portrayal of your actual lineage. In addition, they are not very detailed or complete. In fact, most of these supposed family histories only offer a few paragraphs of information about the origin of the surname. In most cases, there are several different origins for a surname, with their being no guarantee that it is about your specific family.

Many of these companies also provide you with the coat of arms that is supposed to be related to your family. Unfortunately, there is no guarantee that this coat of arms is related to your family because they were usually provided to specific people rather than to a surname. These companies also typically provide you with a list of other people with the same surname as you - information you can gather yourself by simply looking through phone books on the Internet.

Don't: Get Caught Up in Your Hopes

It is common to want to believe that you are related to some famous person from the past. In fact, many people begin genealogy research in the first place because they are hoping to find a family connection with a famous person with the same last name. Therefore, it is important to be honest and open-minded when performing research rather than sway the evidence in the direction you are hoping to go. In addition, resist the temptation to start with the famous person and trace him or her back to you. Rather, start with yourself and see where the research leads you.

Do: Document Your Sources

Every source you use should be documented. This makes it easier for you to cross-reference your findings while also adding clout to your research. Properly documenting your sources includes writing down the location of the document, as well as the name of the source and the date you retrieved it.

Don't: Use Just One Surname Spelling

Limiting yourself to just one surname spelling can cause you to miss out on a great deal of information. Remember that your ancestors may have gone by a number of different spellings. These spellings are commonly found in official records as well. In fact, names were commonly misspelled on accident or purposely changed in order to better fit within a certain culture or to make it easier to remember. Develop a list of possible variations in spelling of your name and go from there when doing research.

By keeping this list of dos and don'ts in mind when performing genealogy research, you will be more likely to successfully trace back the branches on your family tree - and have a great time doing it!

Looking 4 Kin

Most of you are unaware the chat room at Looking 4 Kin is the smallest page on our site. Yet through the years some of my very closest friends have been made on this little page. I know that most of the regular users feel the same about the friendships they have formed and the bonds they have made there.

In Looking 4 Kin Genealogy Chat are not about numbers in the room - that is the least of our worries. We would rather have 8 or 10 good chatters then a bunch who are not on track.

What we want out of the room is a nice, small but friendly group of chatters. The way it has been is perfect, but we never want to see the numbers drop to where they were last fall.

Yes, we will always welcome chatters into the room but it is not our goal to have 20 or 30 in the room at a time.

When the numbers get to high chatting becomes difficult and hard to follow. Bigger isn't always better. Quality not Quantity is by far the best.

Our Goal - To provide for you an active, caring genealogy chat room in which all with an interest in genealogy feel welcome for sharing knowledge, resources, ideas & making of friendships. Our goal has nothing to do with recruiting large numbers of chatters, instead we desire to have your friends and family there.

Most of my free time is spent working on the other 500 plus pages and on my own family history pages.

Looking 4 Kin is not just about a chat room or links, we have message boards, articles, a blog and so much more to offer people.

If you haven't been about the rest of the site be sure to check the sections out:

Brick Wall Day Today in Looking 4 Kin

For today let's all join together in trying to knock down those walls.

Bring a reasonable problem to chat - not John Smith born 1492 somewhere. But someone you have been unable to find in census, someone who is hiding but who someone may find something you have overlooked, or have a suggestion for something you have not tried.

Also bring along with any resources you have that you may be able to use to help others.

Spend an hour in chat with us today, at whatever time works best for you.

Bring a friend, or family member.

Why just relying on the web for research is not enough

I can say from personal experience that much needed information is not on the web, but is available in old family histories, old town histories, old cemeteries and small libraries as well as knowledge that is only available from personal or web contact.

I recently found a large amount of history about my MAY, BURRINGTON and THOMPSON ancestors from discussions with others who pointed me to new sources of information and in some cases provided me access to rare books they owned. Much of this info was not on the web or was on the web only as fragments without documentation of any type.

Of course vital records many of which are either not online or online only as transcribed summaries are still the best source of documented information.

Some information like there are "THOMPSON" family stones in old Cemetery for 1800's in an area I was not aware of the family having been in are personnel knowledge of others. Some of my New England ancestors moved often and the children also moved to various areas. This makes it easy to loss track of branches and chunks of time in tracking family connections.

I have visited some of these cemeteries in areas new to my research and found that yes it appears that my Ancestors were in the area. In others it seems to be an unrelated family with one of my surnames.

Research in old Cemeteries that have stones for family members has the added bonus of turning up unknown siblings and even additional spouses of family members. You may also find the maiden names of wives in some cases and even some info on the spouses family.

In short assuming that everything you need for genealogy research is online is doing yourself a disservice.

Happy St Patrick's Day

Beannachtaí na Féile Pádraig oraibh!

Happy St Patrick’s Day to you all!

Just_M has asked me to give you an item on St Patrick's Day. As far as I am aware, I don't have an ounce of Irish blood in my veins, but perhaps the fact that I live in Northern Ireland gives me the necessary credentials.

A few blogs recently have dealt with Ireland, so I will be a bit more general in my approach and, in the eyes of some people, a bit controversial!!

OK – based on information found on the internet, what do we know about St Patrick?

He was born in -

England (Cumbria)
England (Somerset)
France
Scotland
Wales

The year of his birth was in or around -

337 AD
337 – 340 AD
373 AD
385 AD
between 387 - 390 AD
415 AD

The year of his death was in or around -

454
17 March 460
17 March 461
between the year 460 and 490
somewhere between AD 463 and AD 493
493

He lived to be –

88 years old
120 years old

He died in -

Saul, Downpatrick
Glastonbury, England

Right - we have numerous birthplaces, dates of birth, dates of death and places of death, and that is from a brief search of the internet – there are probably many more answers to the questions posed.

Where does this lead us?

It leads us nowhere – everything that is written about St Patrick is, to a certain extent, conjecture.

I think it is certain that the individual now known as St Patrick was an actual person (unlike King Arthur in England, where the majority of writings are made up of myth and legend). However, we will never know exactly who he was or when he lived.

Now let’s relate this to our family trees.

Do you think you can trace YOUR tree back to Adam & Eve? If so, think again ... if the history of a person like St Patrick cannot be traced with any accuracy, how on earth can you say that you have the family back to ‘day one’? And, when exactly was ‘day one’?

Consider these points -

Have you never hit the problem where, in the church records of a particular area, two people have the same name?

How do you follow the family prior to the existence of church records?

What happens earlier when surnames were not used? – In England, it was not until the reign of Edward II (1307 - 1327) that the practise of using surnames became general.

How do you follow the family from one country (or continent) to another? – There were no such things as ship’s list back then.

So, if you still subscribe to the ‘I am back to Adam & Eve’ theory, look at your ancestors again – check the verifiable information – it is unlikely that the majority of people in the UK can get back past the beginning of church records in 1538, let alone anywhere near Adam & Eve, where it is necessary to chart them through numerous countries!

March- National Women's History Month

In honor of National Women's History Month I intend or researching only female lines for the rest of the month.

I feel that all my female ancestors were heros. They came to this barren land, worked along side their husbands in the fields, bore children, cooked, cleaned, did laundry and were the backbone of the family. How hard their lives must have been in a sod house, with none of today's luxuries and so many children to raise.

So many people only research the paternal sides of their families, and simply forget that the maternal side played an equally important part of their being.

A Genealogy Tool – The Graving Kit

The following was published previously in Looking 4 Kin Newsletter by fishing ( a chatter in Looking 4 Kin Genealogy Chat)

A Genealogy Tool – The Graving Kit

I am no longer quite sure how the idea of developing a Graving Kit became a reality. It started off as a bit of a joke, but the idea was based on some previous experiences and the knowledge that on the day that the idea moved past the talking stage into an actual kit, four of us were just starting out to visit several cemeteries.

What is a Graving Kit?

To answer that, think about how many cemeteries you have visited and found the individual sites of your kin to be in a condition less than satisfactory. Even if the cemeteries are regularly tended, individual graves usually need some attention. Why not do a little maintenance while you are there?

There are any number of ways you can develop your kit and any number of items that can be included. Here’s what we did. We made up a list of what we thought should be the basic tools, keeping in mind that the kit needed to be portable and practical and then made our first stop at a Thrift Store. What we couldn’t find there we supplemented by a visit to other stores and from home supplies.

Kit Inventory

Packsack, small, well constructed.
Spray bottle(plastic)
Glass/Tile scraper plus spare blades
Trowel, small, pointed
Knife, 4” blade
Grass trimmer (hand size)
Clippers(twigs and small branches)
Brush ( medium bristles)
Whisk broom
Water container
Bleach (mixed weak)
Chalk (different colors)
Hand cleaner
Rags
Measuring Tape
Sketch Book
Pencils

And of course a camera. If you can you should have both a digital and a conventional camera.

There may be some question as to the last 3 items . In some of the older cemeteries, particularly those which are on private property, some of the family plot lines have deteriorated and some of the information on the stones is hard to read due to deterioration. It is good to try and redefine the boundries, make a rough sketch and write in what information is still legible.

One reminder, be careful while doing your cleanup! Weather and time take their toll on all of these sites, you don’t want to accelerate natures processes.

Good Morning Everyone

I have updated the chat with the firewall friendly module after finding that at least one chatter was having a problem getting in after I renewed this year, also had to renew the chat for a 1 year period in order to get the firewall friendly setup. So people please don't let me down this year, it is a lot of money for a chat that wasn't busy a good part of last year.

Our chat list is much shorter today as I have gone through the registered people and deleted several who had not been in for a long time and also deleted any who's email addresses are invalid, and the duplicate logins.

Note: I think I may have all the duplicate logins using seperate email addresses deleted, BUT we have 26 chatters out there who are using different login names and the same email address. Please help me save a days work by letting me know who you are, and deciding which log in name you want to use. There is no need to use 2 names in the chat.

See you in chat
