Helping hands helping one another with our family history & genealogy research.
Looking for family of Catherine Spence Lemick, born April 30th 1922, She left Manitoba around 1940, had 2 brothers Robert and we don't know the name of her other brother. Her mother died when she was 8 and Catherine lived with an aunt till she was about 14. Catherine was the birth mother of my husband and we know that there are still relatives in Winnipeg. We had a fair amount of contact with Catherine before she passed away 3 years ago but would like more of her of her history. She did tell us that her family was in Churchill for quite some time and Catherine was either full Native or half Native and half Scottish, She was very reluctant to talk about this too much. At one time she did tell us that her Grandfather or Father was the Postmaster where they lived north of Winnipeg. Again we don't know if this was in Churchill or another place. Any information is greatly appreciated.

Permalink Reply by Nancy on March 11, 2011 at 5:29pm This information is wonderful, now I have hit a road block trying to information on his parents. I have contacted a name that I found that could help me with the cemetery in Balsam Bay but turns out that she had bought the cemetery list and it ended in 1987 and she doesn't even live in Manitoba so is of no help at all. I have spent 2 days trying to get a phone number for the cemetery and/or church in Balsam Bay to no avail. Nor have I heard anything from the funeral home. Any suggestions from anyone on this. I also found someone who thought they could help with Campbell's accident in Fort Simpson but that too seems to have hit a dead end. Oh well, guess I will keep looking.

Being he was cremated there may be no cemetery records
It is St Luke Anglican Church there maybe you can find a contact for someone there - but like many small churches may only be lay ministers now
Have you looked at telus for phone numbers and contacted John Roberts daughters?

Permalink Reply by Nancy on March 12, 2011 at 12:40pm Finally I found some more information on John & Campbell's parents. I was able to reach the funeral home in Selkirk and they told me that his father was John George Spence and his mother was Christina Jessie Monkman. They did no do the funeral for Campbell. He also told me that there probably wasn't any record of John's burial as they spread the ashes and the cemetery in Balsam Bay is very small and doesn't even have an address.

BUT you really need to prove without a doubt that Catherine was their daughter
Christina Spence should show up in the death index on the above site but is not. Do you have any idea why not? She would have died around 1930 id she died when her daughter was 8

Permalink Reply by Eliz on March 12, 2011 at 2:27pm From what I can see "Christina Valintine Monkman" married an Alfred Thomas, I am begining to think this is a whole different woman.. this one was born in 1905 and died in 1978. found the obit and can't connect it to our Christina.
