Helping hands helping one another with our family history & genealogy research.
Hi Alberta Forum.
I've been lurking for awhile & following some of the many helpful links provided on this site.
I live in England so Canadian Genealogy is completely new scene to me!!
My target is Richard Andrew Smith, b. 1877, Lancashire, England; d.14/03/1941, Victoria, B.C.
He travelled to Canada on board the Empress of Ireland, arriving 14 August 1908. His stated destination being Calgary, his profession Solicitor, his marital status was Single.
The 1911 census shows him living in the district of Medicine Hat, Lethbridge. Still single.
I have the following information from the LAW SOCIETY of ALBERTA :-
1910-1915 - Worked in Lethbridge Alberta as a sole practitioner, affiliated with well known (notorious), lawyer Charles Farley Harris.
ca. 1927-1932 - Resided/working in Edmonton at 17 Leamington Mansions, 114th Street
ca. 1932-1940 - Was working with the office of Legislative Counsel in Edmonton (Alberta Government)
1933-1940 - Served as President of the Canadian Bar Association, Alberta Branch
Upon the occasion of his first voyage to England, in 1925, he stated that he was a Widower.
So, between the 1911 census & his voyage to England in 1925 he was married then widowed.
My questions are, of course, who did he marry & when and were there any children??
regards
Jake

Thanks for your rapid reply & for taking an interest.
Regarding his death, I do have that basic information that you posted and have arranged to view the micro filmed records at a local Family History Centre/Church of Latter Day Saints.
I have found 5 trips back to the UK, 1925/27/29/31/ & 33. Always in July/August. His mother died in 1933 so no more visits.
On the CANADIAN GOVERMENT RETURN column 6 gives the MARITAL STATUS.
1925 has a W = Widowed.
1927 has a W = Widowed. fuzzy & hard to read
1929 has an S ?? = Single ??
1931 has a W = Widowed
1933 has an S ?? = Single ??
So, on balance I think he was probably married. Certainly worth checking out??
regards
Jake
Permalink Reply by Just M on February 24, 2011 at 1:04pm Would for sure be worth asking on the British Columbia board if anyone would be able to look for an Obituary seeing as you have death date.
Do you know where he is buried? If not once you look at death certificate it will tell you
Permalink Reply by Jake on February 24, 2011 at 3:59pm I will know more about his death once I have seen the death registration info'.

This mentions that he had a wife (deceased) but no name given!! No children either.
Also gets his sister's name wrong!!

Permalink Reply by MC53 on March 1, 2011 at 4:22pm He might be listed in the 1916 census as Robert H Smith at Hull Block, Lethbridge, Alberta: single, age 38, born in England, Anglican, year of immigration 1908, Lawyer.
Access to the Lethbridge Herald Newspaper Archives might be helpful in finding a marriage announcement.
Permalink Reply by Jake on March 2, 2011 at 3:51pm Hi Michael, thanks for your interest.
Hmmm! That could very well be my man!! Pity about the wrong name & initial.
Age is OK. Country , religion, date of arrival, racial origin and occupation all OK.
I've looked through the rest of the returns for LETHBRIDGE and there isn't a better match.
So I'll take that as being him .
He seems to have been a "ROOMER" in "HULL BLOCK", built by WILLIAM ROPER HULL a famous rancher, entrepreneur and philanthropist. Picture here - Hull Block
Thanks for the links to HENDERSON'S directories, I'll go check them out.

I am attaching the obit from Lethbridge Daily Herald 07 Jun 1923 Section 2 Page 7
Following other little snippets in the paper one could say they married after 1917. Odd that I am not finding a wedding announcement - maybe someone else can.
