Helping hands helping one another with our family history & genealogy research.
My paternal grandfather was born in Ebbw Vale, Wales, in 1873, to parents who were both born in Ireland. His mother's maiden name was Mary Ann Macnamara, but she was a widow when she married my great grandfather (in Ebbw Vale in 1872.
I would like to discover more about my grandfather's half-sister Mary Ann. She was probably born in about 1867, where I do not know, Her father's surname was (probably) Donnel or O'Donnell (with a variable number of ens and ells). The family came to South Australia in 1876. Mary Ann Donnel, age 19, daughter of Patrick Donnel, married James Daley in the Gawler Catholic Church on
9/9/1886, and they had the following children:
■Mary Margaret Daley (parents named as James Daley and Mary Ann O'Donell), b. 5/8/1887,
■William Philip Daley (parents James Daley and Mary Ann O'Donnel), b. 1/10/1892,
■Ilean Bridget Daley (parents named as James Daley and Mary Ann Howlett) b. 11/5/1895,
■James Roy Daley (parents James Daley and Mary Ann Agnes Howlett), b. 17/7/1897,
■Amy Kathleen Daley, (parents James Joseph Daley and Mary Ann Agnes Howlett), b. 31/8/1899.
The last two were born at Williamstown, the previous ones at Willaston.
Mainly, these people seem to have disappeared without trace. The only really convincing piece of subsequent information I have is that Mary Margaret Daly, aged 21, daughter of James Daly, married James Mayland Docherty at St George Church, Gawler on 12/4/1909.
Mary Ann Daly, widow of James Joseph Daly, died in Croydon Park on 7/10/1953. Her age was givenas 92. which is too much for my grandfather's half-sister, but presumably someone got the
age wrong.
Has any encountered these Daleys or Dalys ever?
(Beware: there was a totally different Mary Ann Daly living at Willaston in the same period!)
I have just realized that I forgot to check the electoral rolls for Williamstown in the early 1900's a couple of weeks ago when I had the opportunity to do so easily.
