Helping hands helping one another with our family history & genealogy research.
I dabble in genealogy and have received two requests from two separate Kingshott family members, which is why I am trying to find all the information I can regarding John Kingshott who came to Australia as a convict on the Proteus around 3 August 1831.
John was in Van Diemen's Land (now Tasmania) for sometime, before coming to the Port Phillip District (now Victoria) where he became a blacksmith in Broadmeadows, Victoria.
I do have information on much of the family tree, but it is John's life in both VDL and Greatham, England that I am more interested in.
Any and all information will be most appreciated.

I am also related to the Kingshott families. I have been searching for Thomas Kingshott (b.abt.1722 & Johns grandfather), and I have looked at the maps of the area. Cotsford could be Copthorne which is near Pease Pottage in W. Sussex. I would dearly love to find where Thomas was born and who is parents were. He married Ann Bayley in Greatham where John who came as a convict to Tasmania was born. I'd like to know her parents as well. Perhaps one of the churches in the area would have records going back to the birth of Thomas. Have you or Elayne got any further? Regards Gay (I'm in Melbourne)

Permalink Reply by Skant37 on April 18, 2012 at 10:50pm Hi Fran, I was trailing through the Kingshott letters here and wondered whether you had found out about the Brookers yet? If you haven't, I can tell you that Matilda Brooker 's family came from Berkshire England, and the father was Elijah b. 1816, and mother Ann Mackrell b. 1819.
William Kingshott b. 1844 at O'Briens Bridge, was the son of William b. 1820 & Eliza Peardon, and his father was John Kingshott who came out as a convict. William b. 1844 Nad Matilda's son William b. 1867 married Emmeline Charlotte??. Unfort. I haven't found her name yet.

I can see this discussion is well over, but I have a Mary Ann Kingshott born 23 Feb 1822 in Greatham, Hampshire, England who married William Sargent in New Norfolk Tasmania. Her birthplace was listed on her death certificate which a fellow researcher holds.
I haven't even begun to research that line, I don't even have her parents' names in my database. She lived in New Norfolk Tasmania to the end, my husband is her direct descendant. I wondered if perhaps you had any information on her?

I have some information for you re the Kingshotts.
John Kingshott b. 1 Jan 1792 at Petersfield, Greatham, Hampshire. He died 8 May 1866 at O'Briens Bridge, Glenorchy Tas. Mary, his wife was born 1802 somewhere in england, possibly Hampshire too, and died 27 Feb 1839. They had 7 children, William, Mary Ann, Hannah, John, James, francis, and Ellen. Mary died 2 yrs after Ellen was born. Ellen was born after Mary arrived in VDL.
John was a convicted for stealing , cheese, ham etc for his family as this was in the time of the Industrial Revolution., and the family was hungry because the men lost their jobs to the machinery. After serving his 7 years in Van Diemans Land, his family was brought out from England and they settled in New Norfolk. John had been apprenticed and learnt blacksmithing, His son John also learnt this trade and went to Melbourne and then when the gold rush came in Castlemaine, he took off and found gold and came back to Tas. where I think he bought the farm where his father eventually died. Mary Ann was my 3rd. Great Grandmother.

A correction there. John Kingshott came out on the Proteus, to VDL but remained in VDL and during his 7 yrs, was apprenticed as a blacksmith. When he served his time, his wife, Mary and children were allowed to join him and make a life in Tasmania. It was his son John, I believe who went over to Melbourne as he learnt the trade of blacksmithing after he arrived. He could have been in Broadmeadows, but when the gold rush arrived in Castlemaine, he took off and found gold and came back to Tas. John and Mary had another daughter, Ellen, and Mary lived a further 2 years after that, and then sadly died The older girls would have had to raise her. John Snr. was my 4th. G. Grandfather.
Regards, Gay
