If you use www.freebmd.org.uk to find the event you can then order the relevant certificate online at http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/ , cost £9-25. That gets you a contemporaneous transcription prepared by the local register office. If you want a copy of the actual certificate you'd need to contact the local register office, but in many cases all you get is a modern transcription, rather than a copy of the original. The cost is about the same, but I believe can vary a bit from office to office. You can't access the actual certificates online.

The GRO indexes are on Ancestry, but that's all you get - just the index. You have to buy the certificate to get full details.
