Helping hands helping one another with our family history & genealogy research.
My gg grandfather, Patrick Maguire, was born about 1840/1841 in Co. Fermanagh. I know that he is the son of John Maguire, farmer. In June 1861, at age 21, he enlisted in the Royal Irish Constabulary, R.I.C., and was vouched for by parish priest Rooney of Cleenish church parish, Co. Fermanagh. I have been able to find out about his career and his marriage to my gg grandmother of county Queens (Laois) in 1871. He retired in 1891 and lived out the rest of his life in Co. Tipperary. I have many details of the family post RIC enlistment but I would very much like to know if I can learn about his birth/baptism and his family in Cleenish church parish. I know that Maguire is a very common name in Co. Fernamagh but any assistance is very much appreciated as I know very little about Co. Fermanagh.
Hi Lynn: I am descended from Thomas Maguire and Lucy Patterson of the townland of Cleggan, parish of Cleenish, Co. Fermanagh. They were married in 1820 in the Mullaghdun Parish Church of Ireland. At that time it was called the Cornagee Church, and now the sign says "parish of Cleenish and Mullaghdun". There were a nest of Maguires in that area (and still are), but I have been unable to connect Thomas and Lucy with any of them yet. I see that your Patrick was vouched for by "priest Rooney". Am I to assume then that Patrick was Roman Catholic? Were his parents? This is important because only a fraction of Maguires were protestant. Cleenish is a fairly large civil parish, and the Catholic parish is somewhat different from what I understand. Do you know what Patrick's mother's maiden name was? (John's wife.) I've found the forum at Fermanagh Gold to be extremely helpful in my search. you might give them a shot too.
Hi Carl: Thanks for your reply and information. Yes, I am fairly certain my Patrick Maguire was Roman Catholic. He was married in the RC church and reported himself as RC in the 1901 and 1911 Irish censi. His children were also baptized Roman Catholic. Unfortunately, I do not know the christian name or surname of his mother (John's wife). I found a record recently for his first born (son) whose name was John Francis. His second daughter (third child) was named Elizabeth (Lizzie) Jane. I was able to locate the church parish of Cleenish by going through a catholic church center in Co Monaghan. They told me that that parish priest was at Cleenish church parish in 1861. I will look for the forum Fermanagh Gold. Thanks again and good luck in your own search.
