Hi John,

Starting with John and Mary. There's no marriage in Hunts of a John and Mary. But the first burial in the Hemingfords wasn't until Mary on 19 Apr 1761and Mary again on 10 Dec 1765 (both at Abbots), so it looks as though they were married out of county - it's only a hop and a skip to the Cambs county boundary - and then moved to HA.

There's another Bishop from HA that you haven't mentioned - William bachelor of HA who married Anne Stamford spinster at Abbotsley Hunts on 5 Apr 1768. On 24 Oct 1773 William & Anne of Eynesbury baptised Hannah at Abbotsley. There were no Bishop burials in Abbotsley, and no William burial that fits in Eynesbury.

Equally with Thomas and Ann, there's no marriage in Hunts. The first Bishop marriage in the Hemingfords wasn't until 1819

This lot are a bit of a mystery, to put it mildly. Have you checked the PRs to see if banns were published c 1785?

Hello David, Yes I have checked out the parish records of both Hemingfords whilst I was at the Hunts Archives last November & also checked the Hunts marriage index. This is far back as I could find, so as you suggest they were most likely married across the county border.

Anyway an interesting item I found was the burial of John Bishop age 40 on 4 April 1829 at Hemingford Grey - who was publicly executed at Huntingdon on 4 Apr 1829 for sheep stealing. He was baptised 23 Mar 1789 at Hemf Grey, son of the above Thomas & Ann Bishop. Seems this was the last public execution at Huntingdon; I'd be interested to find out more on this case.

Hi John

I have a feeling that assizes records are kept at TNA, so rather than going to Bedford library on a Wednesday you might consider going to Kew.

There was also a William Bishop tried at Huntingdon assizes in 1808 for sheep stealing, but he was acquitted. Don't know if he was from the Hemingfords or elsewhere in the county. I've got an old floppy of names, dates, crimes and sentences 1805-16 of Hunts, taken from HO27 at TNA. Fortunately saved on my hard drive.
