I am looking for a Thomas Henry Carl Born 1831 Lancashire England. I have quite a bit of information on him after he came to America and married Martha VanBibber in Lincoln county, Mo. Basically it is his parents I am trying to locate. There names cannot be found on any document. All that seems to be mentioned is that on a few documents he says that his parents (Both) were from England and on other documents it states that his father came from England and Mother from Ireland. No names or dates to research. I don't know of any siblings either. It is like he didn't even exist before he came to America and I think that was 1856. He married Martha VanBibber 1857 and lived in Lincoln County, Mo.  Thanks for any info. CC

I think it will be impossible to find anything at all of value on the Lancashire end without more proof from the U.S. info. I take it he never naturalized...and his death had little information? Without a marriage and parent's names, it is grasping at straws...While there are Carl families, the name could have had any variation of spelling from Carle to Karrel...If the ancestor did not write..., the spelling could have taken on all kinds of phonetic distortion by those interpretting it. Hopefully some information might come to light that will open up for some decent searches for you.

all the best, J.

The census collections are hard to find, so the surname may be spelled phonetically, as thought.
The 1880 has him as Caroll and born 1827 Eng. with father born Scotland/mother Ireland https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/M6NN-YCB

The 1900 has him born March 1831 https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/M3ZJ-45N
Where is the family in 1870 and other years? I just see a Thomas Carl who says he was born Ireland in 1835, but he's not with a family, seems to be with a work crew

I am sorry that I didn't answer sooner. I haven't been able to get back here. Anyway, Thanks for that info. I do have a copy of that in my records, although the birth year is different then the obituary, I tried again to find anything I could in Scotland for the parents, still no luck. If I only had a name. I do know that from about 1849-1906 he was in Missouri with his family, Nothing mentions his parents that I can find. I cannot locate anything on his siblings either, I didn't know if he was an only child or not.  Someone mentioned a sister named Nellie but I cannot prove that either. I noticed that while trying to find a birth of Thomas that the records only begin with 1837, Are there other ways of getting info before that. I have searched churches. I have searched graves of the parents as well. There has to be away of finding out more info and I am still pretty new at this, so if anyone can tell me how and where, I would be grateful. Connie

Civil registration of BMDs only started in 1837 in England. Prior to that date you need to find baptisms and burials in church records, rather than births and deaths. The IGI at www.familysearch.org is a good place to start for baptisms, and the Lancashire (not Lancastershire) Online Parish Clerk site at http://www.lan-opc.org.uk/ is very good for baptisms, marriages and burials. You could also try http://www.freereg.org.uk/search/index.htm . None of these online sites are complete for Lancs though, which is why more detail is needed if you can't find his baptism.

What record have you found in 1849? Was he alone or did he emigrate with his parents?

There is a Carrell family in Prestwich in 1841 which includes a Thomas age 9 and an Ellen age 2. Nellie might be Ellen or Eleanor. I'll do some more work on this family after the school run, and after I've tidied the kitchen. I might be some time!

I an sorry, I did have a record for a naturalization of 1849 but I must have decided that it was wrong and deleted it. I do have a citizenship for 1856; ( According to the Obit) Passenger list shows only himself.

I will check out this other information tomorrow. Thabnk you and I will let you know if it comes to anything. Connie
