Helping hands helping one another with our family history & genealogy research.
I have been looking for any information on Jonas Morton. I know he was born in 1871 in Lancashire, and that he married Elizabeth Gardner in 1897.
I have been told that he was a member of a championship british bicycle racing team in Lancaster sometime before 1911 along with his brother-in-law James Gardner.
Any information regarding his parents would be appreciated.

1901 census
40 Gerrard St., Lancaster
Jonas Morton head marr 30 oil cloth warehouseman b Blackburn Lancs
Elizabeth Morton wife 33 b Lancaster, Lancs
Jane Morton dau 4 b Lancaster
Margaret Morton dau 2 b Lancaster
You'll find his marriage registration at www.freebmd.org.uk . Using the reference you'll find there, you can order his marriage certificate from http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/ , from which you'll learn his father's name. This might enable us to find him in the 1871/81/91 censuses, as I can't find him in any of them, unless he's been enumerated as James. Nor can I find a birth of a Jonas in Lancs that fits.
There's a tree on Ancestry at http://trees.ancestry.co.uk/tree/2104102/person/802032499 which looks wrong as his mother would have been 59 when he was born in Blackburn, and she never seems to have set foot outside the USA. But there are a couple of photos of Jonas, one of them with his bike.
But the first step has to be to get his marriage cert., which will cost you £9-25
Bonne année

Permalink Reply by Claudia Valentine on January 9, 2011 at 6:21pm The tree you were looking on ancestry belongs to one of my cousins. I know she has wrong information on her tree. She not only shows our great grandfather's parents has being born in the United States and dying here., she has his father's death as six years before Jonas was born.
I have hard copies of the photos she posted. In the photo with the bike, Jonas is the one in the middle. The one on the left I think is James Gardner, Jonas' brother-in-law and the one on the right is his stepson, Robert Thornton.
I am planning to order Jonas and Elizabeth's marriage certificate. My mom will find it to be a very interesting and unusual birthday present.

Permalink Reply by David11000 on February 8, 2011 at 12:15am The starting point has to be Jonas' marriage cert, which should include his father's name. We might then stand a chance of finding the family in a census.

Permalink Reply by Claudia Valentine on April 15, 2011 at 7:04pm I was looking over Jonas and Elizabeth"s marriage certificate the other day while framing it for my mom and noticed that Jonas' father's last name was spelled Morten. I wonder if this is why he can't be found in any census records before 1901.

Permalink Reply by Stéphan carca on April 16, 2011 at 1:12am What was James' occupation on Jonas' marriage cert?
I've been through all the Jonas' in Lancs and can't see him under any name that might be construed as Morton. The closest is Moore where there's a 7 year old son in 1881 born Blackburn, but his mother is Ellen described as married but no sign of a husband.
