Hi,
I am tracing a family of Dilley born in Hoxton. However, in 1891 census there were two Dilley families living at the same address of 42 Church Street, Bethnal Green.
Both had a mother named Elizabeth. Both had an Albert aged 17/18.
Both had a John aged 10/11.
All children of both families were born in Hoxton.
I cannot find either family in earlier census returns.
Can anyone help me separate these two families and find out which Dilley each Elizabeth married?

I reckon it’s the same family included twice

Baptisms at Hoxton, parents James & Elizabeth Dilley
4 Aug 1869 Walter of 191 New North Rd, labourer
6 Mar 1874 Albert Edward of 191 New North Rd. labourer
2 Apr 1876 Herbert James of 191 New North Rd. labourer Born 14 Mar 1876
14 Jan 1881 John Charles, of 14 Wiltshire Row, labourer Born 20 Dec 1880

In the first family Walter is the head, in the second it’s his mother who’s the head. But the children’s names and ages are the same, other than he’s Herbert in one and James in the other

Looking for them in other censuses
Hi
It did cross my mind that they were the same family. If they had been on different pages, i would have guessed straight away. But to write it on the same page, you'd think the chap doing the writing up would have noticed.

Not so sure now

The LDS transcription of 1881shows (it's also on Ancestry)
RG11/0397 folio 98 page 34
14 Kings Row, Shoreditch, London
John Dilley 41 Waiter b Shropshire
Mary Dilley 42 b Hitchin
Maria Dilley 16 b Shoreditch
Walter 12, Alfred 7; Herbert 5, John 3 all b Shoreditch

At his 1894 marriage Walter 25 of 12 Fuller St gives his father as James Dilley waiter and the witnesses were J Dilley and Elizabeth Dilley

I can't work out what's going on here!

David

I am also very confused.
On that same 1881 census, they have a William Girntin living with them. This is actually William Gunton who marries Maria Dilley later in 1881. She also names her father as James Dilley - waiter on the marriage certificate.
Very strange.

Jane

Maria Dilley 18, of 14 Wilshire Row Hoxton (same as the address for the baptism of John Charles), father James Dilley waiter, married William Samuel Gunton of the same address (he was lodger in the house in the 1881 census) at Bethnal Green on 12 Dec 1881. Witness was Elizabeth Dilley

I think 14 Kings Row in the census is the same as 14 Wilshire Row. The previous page in the census shows 11 and 12 Wilshire Row, then it changes to 13 and 14 Kings Row.

I still think it's the one family in 1891, but why in 1881 the parents show as John and Elizabeth I don't know

David
Or even John and Mary in 1881(not John & Elizabeth!). This family is confused enough without me complicating it further!
