Brickwall: George Sherer circa 1750ish from Scotland
I have a Sherow Family genealogy that was prepared for my great-grandmother in 1982 by a Dorothy Traver (maiden name Sherow).
I've gone over her work a couple of times now and she was on the money about 95% of the time! Not bad for pre-internet days! Greatly indented to her.
However she left a mystery. The tree begins with a mention of George Sherer and his "Huegenot" wife arriving from Scotland. No sources or references for this statement.
They end up having two known children. George Sherer (Jr I suppose) and Benjamin Sherow. (We'll call him Benjamin Sr). There is no explanation for the name change. I have no information on where they arrived or when. I have no birth date for George Jr.
Benjamin is a resident of Dutchess County.

311. Sherow, Elizabeth, w. of Benjamin, d. 1856, Apr. 7, in 86th y.
Elizabeth and Benjamin Sr. are in the 1850 US Federal Census under the last name Sherer. Find-a-grave proof positive Elizabeth is buried as Sherow. To make matters worse, the family not only used these two names interchangeably, there's an alternate spelling of Shero thrown in at times to boot! Not to mention that the entire family loved to name their boys either George or Benjamin! Argh! LOL! None-the-less, this is the family I cut my genealogy teeth on and they are all acounted for, no matter the spelling from then on...
Now for the brick walls. (I said I had none...I LIED! LOL Actually I forgot about this one. Can you blame me?)
Their son Benjamin Jr is buried with her there. Along with her other son Peter Sherer, Peter's wife (same grave) and their son Leland. I believe Benjamin Jrs last wife Harriet maybe in the group interred there also.
Where is Benjamin Sr buried? He did not die in the 1812 war. I have a book mention of him recalling a time in the Hudson valley *before* the mill was built. He is probably around 90 years old at that time.
Where was Benjamin Sr born? Dodrthy Traver states he was born in the US. No sources given. I know she looked at primary sources as she states as much in her cover letters. But no citations are given.
What of the father and mother, and George his brother? Was George the brother born overseas or here?
What state did they arrive in? I have a clue following my Campbell lines...Seems most the Scots ended up coming in through New Jersey. That might explain why I've never been able to locate them anywhere in New York. Although I'm not ready to concede New York just yet...:)

That looks like the one posted at genealogy.com on the message board I believe....I tired to contact that person also but the email bounces....shrug....
She had some names and dates that Dorothy did not have...so I guess they were unaware of each other....Dorothy's dating was a bit more accurate becuase she had actually gone and visited the cemeteries and found 3/4 of these people...Although she says in the cover letter that she couldn't locate either Theron or Fred's gravesite.... Theron we know of course because he's the direct descenedant...he's in Grove Cemetery in Trumansburg...there's at least two branches in not more in that one...Sherow/Davenport and Jeffery's/Davenport and possibly Jacksons... "Grandma Jackson" raised Harry (Jeffery) Davenport when his mother had died in childbirth and the father Lode A. (Loren) Davenport basically dumped infant Harry on her and took off for New York...at least that's the story....LOL
There was also a family story that "Grandma" Jackson had come over "on the boat" with one or more of the Jeffery's and had made a promise to watch Harry (who wasn't concieved yet btw...lol) if anything should ever happen to Bessie...
I found the Jacksons on the boat....no Jeffery's or Daveports on the boat with them....no, Mr. Jackson either....Either he worked for his passage or *like* the Jeffery's, he had passed and the family hopped on the boat and came to America....
I've always wondered how the Jeffery's got into proximity to the Jackson's and or the Davenports for Davenport to meet Bessie *and* "Grandma" Jackson... I've since discovered that most of the Jeffery's in Covert NY and Trumansburg were related to Harry....but we were always told he had no family outside of "Grandma" Jackson and that she wasn't actually related to him (family promise story)....At one point I began to get the feeling we actually were related to the Jacksons beyond the adoption of Harry story...."Grandma" Jackson might actually be grandma Jackson.... There's a large Davenport family in Covert/Trumansburg that I've yet to investigate. Again we were always told we had no relation to them but I'm suspecting differently....they could be the source of Loren Daveport aka Lode Davenport... Remains to be seen...LOL
One clue was my grandmother telling me stories about how when she was a little girl they used to walk out the road toward Podunk....It happens that the Jackson lived out that way I've since found out....
Those family stories....like the Sherer's above....at least in this part of the family they've always turned out to be half-true!...

There's some truth in every "family" story" the one I posted somewhere here about Sherer came from Ancestry..I added the posters name I am sure.

Those Jeffery's are most likely related...when I was discovering that tidbit I noticed all those Davenports in town!
Let's just say I'm highly suspicious of the family story at this point...after discovering the those Jeffery's were related to us!...(we were lead to believe otherwise, reason not known ....yet...lol) Let's just say I think we are related to all those Daveports too...haven't cracked that case yet though....
I did find an Orin L. Davenport, and recalling the 1880 census (IIRC) having them list the initial first....we get L.Orin Davenport...his name is supposed to be Loren Davenport...lol
Orin L. is buried in Lake View Cemetery, Interlaken, NY...
I still have Denisons to dig through yet now though...lol

On the Pittsbury page...for our family at least...it's been reasobaly accurate....the one exception is Elizabeth being marked as dying in 86th....it's supposed to be 80th year.... Whoever was looking at the headstone intepreted the 0 as a 6....
Also on that page...I just found out,although I alwyas suspected but couldn't confirm it...that the Masten/Mastins on that page are Elizabeth Sherow's brother, his wife, and some of their children that died young... Thanks to someone else in the family...actually I think it was deratchford54 who's Sherer/Sherow story you posted...tipped me off that Rowlin/Powland's other son was named Calvin R C Masten/Mastin...who I found in the Census records, and the proof that he is the son of Rowland and Sarah was in the 1880? census he has Rowland Sherow living with him...
Rowland is Elizabeth's grandson from her son John...
One mystery somewhat solved...another takes it place...
Elizabeth and Rowland's parents? I've found lots of Masrten/Mastins but most come after these two...perhaps with the exception of Aart(Aert) Masten who married Pieternella Viele...they resided in parts of Dutchess Co...
With a name like Masten there should be a connection to either Kingston or New Paltz.... However, where they live in Washington Hollow NY....there is a strong connection with Connecticut, namely Stamford, CT...which makes me think of New Rochelle and even New Amsterdam...more New Rochelle though if I remember the chronology correctly...I think New Rochelle came about after the English took over New Amsterdam....I even saw a Long Island connection on that side of the county... So, these Mastens may not have necessarily come from Ulster/Orange counties...
That I haven't explored yet because I've had a major breakthrough on my Jeffery lines! Two more distant relatives with information on the family...:) I'll haveto post a summary when I sort it all out...!

Hmmm....Orin L.... I have a feeling this mystery is gonna be a tough one...
I just made contact with the man that maintains the Jeffery names list for Tompkins Co. and it turns out I'm distantly related to him...LOL
He insists that the guys name is Lode A. Davernport but then says he can't remember where he got the name from...:)
I'm thinking I'll stick with "Lode's" son who told us his fathers name was Loren.
One clue he did affirm was the connection to Utica which I was beginning to doubt....but now I'll have to revisit that...
