Helping hands helping one another with our family history & genealogy research.
I've been having trouble tracing my father's lineage from Ireland to NYC.
My G-Grandfather Patrick Joseph Connell was born the son of Martin Connell and Mary (Keegan) Connell in South Dublin, IRE, on March 16, 1865.
He had a number of siblings, but there's some confusion as to who's a sibling and who's not, possibly some cousins or other relatives were mixed in on occasion, hard to tell.
I have an actual birth record for Patrick Joseph, and I also found an immigration record from 1878 which matches quite well.
I also found an 1880 Cenus which also adds up, showing him with his parents and siblings: Martin (38), Mary (43), Patrick J (15), Mary T (12), Henry J (8), Bridget (3), Martin C. (1) (NYC).
I also obtained a copy of the original marriage cert for Patrick and his wife Margaret Mary Divers.
On that record, the marriage is shown as December 26, 1901. The Priest, Fr. Keseh, was residing at 477 Hudson which I presume to be St. Luke of the Fields. Patrick J Connell is shown as 37, Margaret Mary Divers is 25, with parents Hugh Divers and Hannah Muleahy(SP?), they were both residing at 98 Christopher St.
I also found a number of census records showing them living in the same building as Patrick's brother Henry Joseph, along with his wife and 5 kids, Henry appears to have married a Kate Bowls around 10 years previous.
Now, here's where things get dicy....
When Patrick J Connell's last son was born in November 1911, John Joseph Connell, my Grandfather, that was the last time I can find a record showing Patrick.
The 1915 census shows his wife listed as "Widow". More confusing, his brother Henry's wife is also shown as "Widow" in the 1920 census, also with 5 kids.
As of yet, I have been unable to locate any records to prove when or how Patrick, his brother Henry, or their parents Martin or Mary died.
I also have very little info regarding Patrick's other siblings, Bridget, Catherine, Mary, or Martin C. As far as I can tell, Catherine frequently went by the name "Della", and there's letters in the family that show that she and Bridget married well-off men and had kids.
Patrick Joseph Connell and Margaret "Maggie" (Divers) children were Mary, Martin, Henry, Margaret, John Joseph, and Annie.
Family letters show Mary dying young from TB (around 20), Henry and Annie dying in childhood, leaving only Martin, Margaret, and John Joseph surviving.
Martin may have lived on until the 1970's, may have even had a wife and kids, but was rarely talked about. John Joseph's obit shows him as a brother in 1969.
Margaret married an Archie C Porter in 1943 and had at least a son John, she passed around 2003.
John Joseph is my grandfather, he married a Helen Margaret Creighton in 1936 and only had 2 children, Marilyn (Heuther) O'Connell (1939) and John O'Connell (1940).
John Joseph, my Grandfather, was born as Connell (I have a cert) and married as a Connell, but later that year recieved a new Social Security card with the name O'Connell.
My grandfather passed in 1969, his wife in 2000, and my father in February of this year (2012).
The most important thing I'd like to find is when, and preferably how, Patrick Joseph, his brother Henry Joseph, and their parents, Martin and Mary (Keegan) Connell died.
I'm currently dealing with some rather nasty health issues, and not knowing how so many family members died in their 40's and early 50's has me a bit bothered. My Grandfather passed from Pancreatic Cancer, so there's a possibility of a hereditary risk factor.
Edit: Fixed an error and typo.
Was Patrick alive in 1910 and if so what street address were they living at in NYC?
What was the adress his widow was living at in 1915?

Patrick J Connell was last shown on his son John Joseph Connell's birth record.
Date of Birth: November 11th, 1911
Place of Birth: 433 West 50
Father's Occupation: Laborer
Mother's Name: Margaret Connell
Mother's Name before Marriage: Divers
Mother's Birthplace: Ireland
Mother's Age: 36
Number of Previous Children: 6
How many now living in all: 3
Father's Name: Patrick Connell
Father's Residence: 433 West 50
Father's Birthplace: Ireland
Father's Age 47
So this one might fit?
Connell Patrick 49 y Jan 4 1913 373 Kings
49 years on January 4th would mean he turned 49 in 1912, therefore born 1863, and he was a resident of Manhattan, not Kings.
This one looks much more likely. Patrick was born in March of 1865, which means he would have had his 48th birthday on March 16th, 1913, which fits precisely with this record, and the location also matches better.
Here's a bit of a puzzle...
On the 1878 immigration record there are 4 kids coming over with Martin Connell and Mary (Keegan),
Patrick: 11 (1866)
Mary: 9 (1869)
Henry: 6: (1872)
Eliza: 1 (1877)
Now, I have located all the indexed birth info for Martin and Mary, except Mary T, and it includes:
Patrick Joseph: 1865-03-16
Henry Joseph: 1871-08-18
Mary T was mentioned in the family bible as 1868, all the other dates are in the bible as well, tack on for all of them.
Martin C was born in 1879 in NYC, unknown day.
You'll notice however that the immigration record does not show Bridget or Catherine Connell, however, the 1880 census does.
Also, who is Eliza Connell? There is no record of her being born in Dublin to Martin and Mary, and more to the point, unless Eliza is another name for Bridget, those dates conflict, she couldn't have been 1 year old in 1878 if Bridget was born in 1877, unless they were twins, which there's no record of (family or otherwise).
Bridget went by the name "Della" throughout most of her later years, married an Andrew Cahill.
Catherine I'm not sure what happened to her, I suspect she died young, she wasn't mentioned in the family letters.
Mary married and had kids, not sure who.
Also, there is an Eliza Connell, born in North Dublin to a Patrick and Mary Connell with a date that fits the immigration record (1876-08-22). On their marriage cert it shows Patrick's father as Martin Connell.
Now, a bit of context... Connell's are common to Ireland as a whole, but not to Dublin. In 1860 there were only 14 residents in Dublin with Connell as the last name. Furthermore, Martin is a Germanic or Latin name much more than an Irish name. Story goes that Martin gained some popularity with St. Martin of Tours, France on the Catholic side of things, especially in Ireland because he was a relative of St. Patrick, but at any rate in Ireland it currently ranks #65 in names.
Now, you have to wonder why there'd be 2 Martin Connell's in Dublin if they weren't related, the chance of them not being related are slim and none, considering there only being 14 Connell families in Dublin in 1860.
But here's my delima, Patrick was the first born son of Martin, born 1842. I found a birth record for Patrick in Killcuan, Roscommon, about 20 miles West of Dublin, in 1842, with the father's name as Patrick. The naming convention fits like a glove, and more to it, Martin was that Patrick's first-born, and that Patrick's father was Martin.
So, how could Eliza be related if her father is Patrick and her grandfather is Martin, if the other childrens' father is Martin and his father's name Patrick?
Also the census shows a John and Johanna Keegan, Mary Connell's maiden name. How do they fit in?
Made a bit of an error...
Going to try and clarify:
My G-Grandfather is Patrick Joseph Connell, b.1865-03-16, son of Martin Joseph Connell (calc b.1842) and Mary Keegan (calc b.1836).
I have no birthdate or death date for Martin Joseph Connell or wife Mary (Keegan). They appear on Patrick J and siblings birth records, the immigration, and the 1880 census, and that's it. I have no marriage info, or any oral or written accounts, family or otherwise, where they went after 1880, or where they were born, or dates for birth, marriage, or death.
1842 is the best estimate for Martin Jospeh's birth year, and I found a record that fits well in Killucan, Roscommon for Martin Joseph Connell, son of Patrick Joseph Connell and Celelia Cuffe. Siblings names include multiple family names, Bridget, Mary, Patrick, Henry, Catherine, and William (only one not found in my tree).
So, if Eliza's (b.1876) father is Patrick Joseph (b.1842), who had a first-born son Martin Joseph, and father Martin Joseph, how does she fit?
I suppose if you back another generation, Martin Joseph, (b.1842) and Patrick Joseph (b.1842) both shared a common grandfather's name, Martin Joseph, I'll have to check and see if they're actually cousins.
