Helping hands helping one another with our family history & genealogy research.
Hello Everyone,
Well, I sure hope someone may be able to give me a hand. I have been searching for years and years for more info on my GG-Grandfather. I have sooooo much info on him except for who his parents were and where in Washington Co., NY he was born.
He was born on 4 Sept 1808 in Washington Co., NY and died on 3 Nov 1890 in Shabbona, Dekalb Co., IL. He wasn't in Washington Co., for too long, I do know that, which is what makes this search much harder. Lyman lived in numerous states, such as, OH, IA & IL. Lyman was in the 37th Regiment Iowa Volunteer Infantry in the War of the Rebellion/Civil War. Lyman was married twice, first to Hannah Gates (who he's buried with), who died at the age of 39 and then to Lydia Ann Weston (my GG-Grandmother, I don't know where she's buried). He had 18 kids between the 2 wives, yes, 18 kids!!!!!! He must've been a real stud muffin =) I wish I knew what he looked like. I found him in pretty much every single census there is, so I do know all of his general info. Except for those 2 things, parents and where in Washington Co., he was born, it's a mystery... =/
I can provide some other info outside of immediate family. There were some people with the last name "Norton" who were ALWAYS with him per the Census'. One being David and the other Henry (who were about the same age within a couple of years). But, I was able to find info on these men and they are not Lyman's siblings, I'm thinking cousins... Then, there were a couple named William and Abigail Norton, who were around Lyman in several of the Census' as well, they were old enough to be his parents and they always lived near by, which would tell me that they could have been his parents, but there is NO PROOF!!! I can't just base it on how far they lived from each other in different cities. They could have been his Aunt & Uncle for all I know, I do know that they were not David and Henry's parents... So, who knows. Maybe they were Lyman's parents, but I need to get the proof.
So, I'm hoping that someone out there can help me figure out how to get info from someone/somewhere in Washington Co. NY re: births from the early 1800's.
Thank you EVERYONE for taking the time to read this super long post!!!

Co ans ask about 1800's records..
Natalie,
Have you tried to get a copy of his pension file? It might provide you with more information.

Permalink Reply by Natalie79 on March 7, 2012 at 11:09am I actually did... I has a ton of info... Except for where he was born or his parents names... =(
Thanks anyway. =)
