Helping hands helping one another with our family history & genealogy research.
Hello everyone!
I am hoping someone can help me. I am researching the following people who settled in Minneapolis, Minnesota in 1906.
Hans Jorgen Hermansen:
Arrived in New York on February 22, 1906 on the ship Hellig Olav. He lists his last address as Trondheim, Norway his occupation is laborer and birth year is 1872. (I have this document)
He is listed on the 1910 and 1920 US census. On both documents he states his birth year is 1872, his occupation is laborer and he married Hilma in 1905 in Norway. (I have these documents also.)
He does not show up on any 1930 US census with that name. So he essentially disappears. My family recollects that he was a fisherman in Norway, and because his family was so poor in Minneapolis, he went to Alaska, joined a fishing company and died when the ship went down.
My questions are:
Can some one locate his birth records, his actual birth date and parent’s names? He told family he was born in Trondheim and his father’s name was Herman Hansen.
Can it be verified that his actual occupation in Norway was fisherman? Since he lists his occupation as laborer, I am wondering if this was true.
Also, I have a suspicion that he actually went back to Norway, but I cannot confirm. Though I did find a Social Security document that states:
Name:
Hans Hermansen
SSN:
516-28-5599
Last Residence:
703 (U.S. Consulate) Oslo, Norway
Born:
11 Feb 1882
Died:
Nov 1966
State (Year) SSN issued:
Montana (Before 1951)
Could this be him? I realize the birth year is not match the census, but just wondering.
Hilma Claudina Hermansen.
Maiden name is Oien. Birth: 12-28-1884 in Namsos, Norway.
Father’s name: Matrin Marius Oien (not confirmed)
Mother’s name: Margaretha Vinge (not confirmed)
Can anyone verify this information? And also confirm/verify if she did marry Hans Hermansen in 1905?
I know this is a lot to ask. But any information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much for taking the time to read this.

1. As for your question "On the census does Hilma Claudina Hermansen appear with him?"
Yes. Hilma and Hans are both listed on the 1910 and 1920 US census living in Minneapolis, MN. The 1930 US census shows only Hilma living in Minneapolis. She is not with any of her children, and appears that she is renting a room, employed as a laundress and it looks like a "D" for marital status. (I assume that means divorced but I cannot find a Minnesota divorce certificate.)
I cannot find Hans in any 1930 US census. (That is if he used the name "Hans Hermansen". ) Like I said before, it is as if he just disappeared.
There is only one surviving son, (he is 93 years old) and he said that his father left the home about 1927 to 1930. He only remembers being told that Hans left to join a fishing boat on the west coast of either the states Alaska, Oregon or Washington and drowned. But he also thinks that maybe Hans went back to Norway.
I am assuming that locating Han's birth certificate has not been easy? I also have been trying to locate it for some time. I think if it was found, I would have a better Idea of what happened to him.
2. As for your second question: Is Lillian Penteluk, Hans and Hilma's daughter?
Yes. I believe it is. Will this info help your search for Hilma Claudine Oien?
Thank you so much for looking into this.
I am most grateful.

Permalink Reply by Just M on October 10, 2011 at 11:18am Births of children (depending on where it occured) carry much information and could help you find more documentation on where the parents are born. Also death records often contain further info (but one must remember this is second hand info passed on at a time of stress)
When I am stuck I work the entire family as deeply as possible and somewhere in what I find there are usually clue
Permalink Reply by Mary Upgren on October 10, 2011 at 11:24am I really appreciate the time you put into this.
Yes, I also am having a really tough time finding anything concerning this family. Unfortunetly, many of Hans and Hilma's cildren were either adopted or sent away to live with strangers. Therefore it becomes more difficult.
But, again thanks for trying and if something comes up, please do not hesitate to write me.

Both Hans and Helma are still Aliens
Arthur is missing from the census. Has he passed away? If so what info is on his death record and where is he buried?
Permalink Reply by Mary Upgren on October 10, 2011 at 12:37pm This what I have found regarding Hans and Hilma's children:
CARL H.: He did stay in Minneapolis, MN. Died in 1972
ARTHER: was adopted by neighbors and they renamed him Clarence. (Last name unknown) According to the family, he died at 11 years of age. I do not have death record)
BERNICE: Married..last name Cope. Died 12-3 2007 in Minneapolis.
HELENA: She was adopted at around 4 years old to Norwegan family in Bemidji Minnesota. New last name is Narum. (I did find her in the 1920/1920 Census) No death record though.
LILLIUM: This is the daughter you found for me! Family said that she was sent to a farm in Northeren Minnesota to live.
ARNOLD: Did stay at home for a while. Died in 1941 in Minneapolis, MN.
ROY: Still living. But left home at around 7-8 years to work on the same farm that Helena was adopted.
Note: There is another daughter called Elsie. Family has said she was also sent to live with others at a young age, but don't know who or whether she was adopted.
I did see the death certificate of Carl and Bernice, but no reference to who Hans or Hilmas parents were.
I have also been told that there were actually nine children. The first child was born before Hans and Hilma came to the US. But the child died before they came over.
Also, some people think that Han's father's name was herman Hansen. (Not verified)
As you can see, the family was very poor and thus they had to give away their children. Because of this, there is very little information to go on.
The fact that you can not find them in Norwegian Census, tell us that they had dfferent names before they came to the states?

Such a mystery!!
Permalink Reply by Mary Upgren on October 14, 2011 at 9:46am Hi,
Not sure if my last post went through, so I will try again.
I found an immigration document "Emigranter fra Trondheim 1867-1930" that lists my ancestor. The ship left Trondheim on February 2, 1906 and the record number is 123452. But the name is HANS JORGEN HERMUNDS., not HERMANSEN.
Also his wife's first name is HELMA. even though the birth year dose not match the incoming ship's log, I know that this is them!
I am assuming that he changed his last name when he got to the states.
I do have a question for translation: Under occupation for Hans, it lists the word (or abbreviation) Byarb. Can you translate this for me? I have looked throgh a Norwegian dictionary and cannot find. This might help me continue my research.
Also it says under ship "via Xania. Is that a port or ship name?
Also last address for Hans is Thjem f Buknes. I found that Thjem is for Trond heim, but any information as to what f Buknes means?
Thank you so much for any answers you can provide.

Sorry I cant read the stuff on the site digitalarkivet.uib.no where I presume you found the other transcription
Permalink Reply by Mary Upgren on October 15, 2011 at 6:44am Hi again!
Yes, I found the document on the site digitalarkivet.uib.no.
Was wondering if you could translate a few few words to English from that document?
1. Under occupation for Hans, it lists the word (or abbreviation) "Byarb." Can you translate this for me into English? I have been looking at a Norwegian dictionary and thought maybe it is an abbreviation for "works for the city". It would be beneficial to know what Hans' occupation was.
2. Under the SHIP column, is listed "via Xania." Is that a port or ship name?
3 The last address listed for Hans is "Thjem f Bukn" I found that Thjem is for Trond heim, but any information as to what "means?
Thanks again!

Permalink Reply by Basiclysue on April 19, 2013 at 7:51pm Hi Mary. I was just reading your last post. It's been about a year since I was pouring through Digitalarkivet Parish Registers. I can tell you that via Xania means via Kristania, which is a city. In the books most of the time they would use X instead Christ. So the name Christian would be Xtian. The f Bukn could stand for born in Bukn. The word for born is fodt. Many times just an "f" was used. I have no idea where that is but it's possible. Also a last name Hansen would appear as Hanf. Using the old "f" instead of "s" and dropping the "en". There is a site that has old Norwegian words that I found. I'll see if I can find it. Tomorrow. Hope this helps a little.
