I'm looking for the parents of and other information on Janet Morrison (b 1814 in Scotland) and James Scott (b 1815 in Scotland.)  They are my great great grandparents and lived in Ontario.  I don't know when they came over from Scotland.

One of their children was Termutha Ann Brown(e) Scott.  When she was 21, Termutha married Jesse Ketchum IV in Ontario.  They later took their children and homesteaded near Saskatoon, Saskatchewan.  It does not appear that James and Janet went with them.

Some of my reseach shows that James and Janet may have had the following children: Rhoda Evelina Jesse Frasier Scott, Robert Scott, Maggie Jane Joanna Scott, and George Alexander B. B. Scott.  One of my great aunts was named Rhoda Frasier Ketchum, so it's likely that she was named after Janet's and James' daughter.

There was a James Scott who died in Peterborough, Ontario, in 1893, but I don't know if this is the same person.  There's a James and Janet Scott listed in the 1871 Census of Canada, with 3 children, but not the children listed above, or Termutha, who was born in 1859 in Mount Forest, Ontario.

Thanks for any help on this.

Thanks for this info and the 2 photos. It's really helpful. I probably do have the wrong dates for James and Janet. Your information makes more sense that what I had found.

Hello mtidsews

Your Welcome.

If this is the family you are searching and need further assistance, will gladly try to assist.

Will need to know what information you are seeking?

Yes, this is the family. Termutha is my great grandmother. I'm trying to find out who James Scott's and Janet Morrison's ancestors are.  I've run into a wall trying to find out who their parents are.

James Scott is such a popular Scottish name, and there are a number of Janet Morrisons too.  I couldn't find a record of them coming to Canada from Scotland, but I think a relative who's gone now said they were born in Scotland.

My dad, who's also gone now, said that we were descended from the same clan as Mary, Queen of Scots, but I don't know where he got that from and haven't been able to trace the lineage.  I don't know if it was just family rumor, or if there was documentation.

I'd appreciate any information you might have.

The image for the 1861 Census has one family residing in a 2 Storey Frame house.

James, Janet & Termutha Scott, also James Morrison (possible brother to Janet),George Reid, Robert,Elsphit,Alexander Scott (possible siblings to James)

The 1901 Census for James Scott has immigration 1850,as for Janet according to the Census is born in Ontario, Canada.

Will need to look at the 1851 Census of Canada to see if a match can be made based on the information provided in the 1861 Census.Have to go to work, will look later.

That's really been helpful.  I went into Ancestry and did a new search.  Found them in the 1891 and 1901 censuses.  Still can't find anything on their parents, but have been able to correct a number of errors in my tree for them and their children.

I tried to find their graves in findagrave.com, but didn't find them. Had hoped that might lead me to their death certificates. I know they were still in Ontario in 1901, so they would have been around their 70s then.

I also don't know when they were married.  They both were near 30 when Termutha was born.  The next child wasn't born until about 13 years later.  Wonder if perhaps they lost some children in between.  It's unusual in those days to have that much distance between kids.

Is there a way you could forward the image of their 1861 home?  Those types of details make it so much more personal.  I love to know more about my ancestor's lives as well as their names.

Hi Mtisews

I am a bit confused with your reply, the information of the home was on the image of the 1861 Census that I sent to you, there is not a photo of the home.

As for the siblings of Termutha, not sure why you think there is 13 years to the next sibling, the 1871 Census I sent has a child R E, if you had looked at the image you would have seen that RE is a male born about 1863.

Now that I know you have ancestry, look for the 1881 Census and you will see his name is Robert.

The occupation for James Scott listed in the 1861 & 1871 says he is a Merchant, to me this would suggest he traveled could explain the gaps of the children's birth.

When you have the time take a look on Ancestry for the 1871 Census, that has your Grandmother Termutha, look at he image than go back one page scroll down to the bottom and you will see another Scott family. There is a William Scott born 1791 in Scotland, he is widowed.C ould be a clue, was going to work on that this morning but have run out of time.

James Scott according to Census has resided in Mount Forest, Ontario Canada for a least thirty years,so I will send a link for the library, not sure what services they provide but may be worth your time to contact them.

Ahh, I found the problem.  It was set at 16 entries.  Now is 20, which appears to be the max.  What do people usually do if they hit the max, start a new discussion and continue?

Anyway, here's the response I was going to send you.

I read wrong and thought there was an actual photo.

You're right about Robert.   2 Roberts are associated with them.  One is 17 in the 1881 census, and the other is 11 in the 1901 census. 1901 may be a grandson.

I did a search on Rhoda Scott.  She married a Fred R W Plunkett on Nov 22, 1905 and had 2 children.  He was a woodworker in a factory in the 1911 census.

I'll do some more searching on William Scott, 1791.

The fact that James was a merchant also may fit with other family information.  I was told that Termutha was an excellent pianist and at one point, had studied in Europe.  Since her father was a merchant, she may have accompanied him on a European trip.  Her daughter, my grandmother, was on vaudeville as a piano player, singer and whistler.  Interesting how additional facts fit together so nicely!

Thanks for the library link.  I'll contact them to see if they have additional suggestions.

I want you to know how much I appreciate all the information you're giving me.  It's really helping me to refine other searches and find out more about this branch of the family.

Have you seen this link there is a school named after this Jesse Ketchum. Maybe this is a son or father of the Jesse your looking for.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jesse_Ketchum

Thanks, Donna.  I hadn't seen this particular reference, but it matches some others I found on Jesse II.  This did add some additional details that I didn't have before.  He was quite a philanthropist and there's an award still given to the top 8th graders in Buffalo, NY each year, that he originated in his will.  This is the grandfather of Termutha's husband, Jesse Ketchum IV, and my gggg grandfather.

There is also a Plaque with some info on him, I have walked by this Plaque a lot so that's how I remembered his name.  I can check the Toronto Pages of the Past to see if there is any info on them in the paper maybe a obit or something else about him.  The info on the Plaque might be info you already have but it would be nice to have it for your genealogy records.

This is fabulous!  Thanks so much for sending me the link.  I hadn't heard of this plaque, and there appears to be a lot of other good information on this site.  I'll add this to my notebook of places I want to visit when we make a trip to Toronto.  Thanks again for your help!
