Helping hands helping one another with our family history & genealogy research.
Hi. I am researching Rita Mary Spanger, born in Merritton On. Her parents were from (Montreal)Quebec, possibly Garnet Spanger and Eva Corsoran. She moved to TO eventually with her family, (brother Edward) and married there. Her husband was Philip Ernest Gilbert. They were married approx. 1938-1939
She was raised in the Don Valley, beneath what is now the Bloor Viaduct. Her family were parishioners of Holy Name Catholic Church, Danforth Avenue.

Permalink Reply by Susan on January 9, 2012 at 1:29pm I am very interested in any info we can "dig up." Her sons seem to have no records of the history of her life. I have found a death cerificate for a still born child with a name, the same as hers, minus Harmon, and the same date of birth. This info is listed in archives for Merritton (St Catherines) ON.
thanks for your interest and help
Have a great day!
Susan

Permalink Reply by Susan on January 9, 2012 at 10:08am She had a brother, Edward J, who passed away in 1978. He fought in the 2nd world war, and his wife Aline, was a member of the forces as well. Rita told me that her mother was French Canadian. She never talked about her dad. Rita passed away Feb 16 2000, being born Jan 18 1918. Searching through archives for Merritton(St. Catherines)ON, her birthplace, I discovered a death certificate for a still born birth with the same name & birth date that she claimed to have, Mary Rita Theresa Giselle (Harmon) Spanger. She apparently grew up in the Don Valley, beneath what is now the Bloor Viaduct and attended Holy Name Catholic Church and a Catholic school in the area.
Having said all of that, maybe her dad was not from Quebec. I discovered a Spanger male, who was born in Welland ON, 1911. Haven't had time to research that one.
She married, Philip Ernest Gilbert, born Mar 23 1909 in Croydon, Surrey London who emigrated to Canada, with his mom and dad in 1911. I know their anniversary was in April-June/July, as we celebrated their 35th, in 1973-1974.
Her oldest son, 71 , recalls nothing and never heard about her father and no one seems to have her records. Her second son knows nothing. I am beginning to wonder that there is some family history that no one wants known. I have researched the Toronto Star archives for both death/birth records, and nothing. A newspaper article from the 40's talks about the arrest of an Edward Spanger and friend for break-in activity. Researching that name brings me nothing. I wonder that this would have been her brother. In any case, it is a case of having to hire a "Philidelphia Lawyer" to "break the case", as Rita would say.
In any case, will keep on searching. There has to be a break somewhere.
Thanks for your help,
Susan
