Hi all, I've been searching for about 10yrs for these grandparant's ancestors.

They are Ellen Nicholls b c 1845, possibly in South Australia, I do not have her birth. She married (???) Alfred John Todd b 23/11/1848 in Enfield, S.A. Australia. He joined the the S.A. Police Force 2/6/1867 & transferred to Palmerston, Northern Territory, 14/4/1870, arriving there 24/6/1870. I don't have Alfred's parents either!

They had 2 sons Alfred John Todd (jnr) b 6/11/1869 in Adelaide S.A. & Ernest Percivall Todd b7/4/1872 in Palmerston, N.T. Australia.

Alfred snr was widowed before 7/11/1876 when he married Maria Evans in Adelaide, S.A.

Any help with any of these would be a blessing, thank you,

Cheers, Marilyn.

The Register of 28/11/1876 has a marriage notice for Alfred John Todd and Annie Evans

married on 7/11/1876,

It doesn't help with the things you are really asking about, I'm afraid.

Cheers, Bob.

Thanks Bob, yes, I do have all that info, but thank you for looking anyway. It's interesting that he is registered as widowed, surely he must have been married before & not defacto to state that! Having said that, lol, it blows me away how many fibs they did tell in legal documents!

Cheers, Marilyn.

Do you think Ellen could have remarried and Alfred said he was a widower rather than divorced!

Might be why you can't find her death information.

Did you Try other states Marilyn?

I've been looking for mentions of A. J. Todd in newspapers, and found several. Perhaps of most interest for you is this one:

http://trove.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/article/39295079

It contains the information that Mrs A. J. Todd died on 6/9/1873, on board the "Omeo" en route from Port Darwin to Melbourne. She had been unwell in Darwin and a change of air had been recommended. Travelling with her were her two sons, one aged 3 and the other aged 18 months.

Here are some other articles that mention A. J. Todd:

My goodness Bob, you are a genius! You have no idea how many talented researchers have searched for her & found nothing! I am so grateful, thank you, thank you, thank you!

I haven't checked the rest yet, just had to thank you straight away, you clever, clever, man. Marilyn.

Hi all, does anyone know where I would be able to apply for a death certificate for someone who died on a ship please? I guess she would have been buried at sea!
Cheers, Marilyn.
