Helping hands helping one another with our family history & genealogy research.
My great Grandmother was born 14 Feb 1865 according to my Grandmother. Sarah Marie Morris, daughter of John, was born in London, Staposhire, England.
At some point in time she migrated to the United States where she married William Earnest Harford in 1886 in Pennsylvania.
I am just beginning my research on this part of the family. My first question is if Staposhire is a correct county/district for London? I see groups for Staffordshire--would this be the same? Someone has also mention Shrofshire. I apologize for misspellings--need to get my Atlas out.
Thanks for any guidance you may be able to give.
Staposhire is not a county. The closest phonetically is Staffordshire, which is 150 miles NW of London. London is a big place and with a stretch of the imagination could be said to have been part of four counties: Middlesex, Essex, Kent and Surrey. Why anyone would mention Shropshire (not Shrofshire) I can't imagine other than it starts with S and ends with shire. Where does the information as to her birthplace come from?
Birth registrations can be found at www.freebmd.org.uk but I can't see a Sarah Marie Morris, nor can I see a Sarah Marie Morris in a census, although middle names are not usually given, and there are too many Sarah Morris' to be useful.
There are Longdon and Longton in Staffs which might sound like London
The information came from my Grandmother. I am just starting to into the possibilities over there. Most of my research has been done state side. Thanks for the info. I will put it with my records and puzzle it out a bit more.
I appreciate the help. I know my query left much to be desired, but it is all I have to start with at this point.
