On the 1841 census Frances was married to James Hobbs and were living in the district of St George the Martyr, Surrey.

I wish to go back a generation on Frances family but no luck so far.

I'm hoping to find a sister Sarah to unravel a brick wall problem in the Hobbs family.

I can find just the one James and Frances Hobbs in 1841, but they were living in Church St, St John Horseleydown, Southwark, not St George the Martyr, Surrey which is a nearby parish in Southwark. Their children were James 5 and Elizabeth 3. If this is the correct family then in 1851 they were living in the same parish with Frances 42 born Bowes, Yorkshire, and children James 15, Elizabeth 13, Thomas R 11 and Emma 6.

You seem to be jinxed this morning as the IGI is down - I'm hoping to find a Frances baptised in Bowes c1811 (Bowes baptisms have been extracted onto the IGI), and Ancestry seem to have lost their London marriages database - it seems likely that as James was born in Southwark they married in London. If all else fails you could purchase the birth certificate of Emma from which you'll get Frances' maiden name. She was baptised as Emma Jane and there's a birth on Freebmd in the March quarter 1845 in St Olave Southwark registration district (which includes St John Horseleydown) vol 4 page 1_9 (the full page number is illegible), from which you should get Frances' maiden name. But hang on before ordering it as the IGI and Ancestry will, I'm sure, be working properly before too long.

Tell us more about the problem you're trying to untangle.

David
Have now found a James and Fanny Hobbs both 35 in St George the Martyr, with Henry 15, James 13, Fanny 9, Alfred 7, Thomas 5, Robert 2. In the same house but separate household were Henry Jones 60, Martha 55, Emma 7. Is this your family, and might Henry and Martha Jones be the parents of Fanny?
I see in an older thread that when Fanny remarried, her father's name was given as Henry Jones.

I'm not meaning to ignore you David. I have to get my notes together before I try to explain this. Charles Hobbs is where my problem lies but needs a bit of explaining.
