Helping hands helping one another with our family history & genealogy research.
I am trying to research the Garbutt family from Thirsk/North Allerton.
James Garbutt born Jan 28, 1923 and died June 22, 2004. His parents were Fred and Doris Garbutt. I know of one sister named Joan and she married John and they had a daughter Margaret.
Fred Garbutt was a farmer as far as I have been told.
James had an Aunt & Uncle possibly Tom and Doris Garbutt who had a son Stephen who also lived in the Thirsk area.
James and his second wife Jean lived in Thirsk in the early 1950's - their daughter Marjorie was born March 28, 1951 and was christened in Thirsk, born in North Allerton
James adopted his second wife's two older children Christine and Sharyn - born 1940 and 1945 respectively.
I am having great difficulty looking up information - it is more difficult because I live 3000 miles away in Canada. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

We all use the internet to at least start our research, and in particular for post 1911 events, which can be found on www.freebmd.org.uk and on Ancestry.
Immediate major problems:
- there's no birth of a James Garbutt anywhere in England in the March quarter 1923
- I can't see a marriage of Fred* Garbutt to a Doris. How sure are you about her name, particularly as another Garbutt brother also married a Doris?
The closest match for the marriage is in 1919 in Northallerton where Francis W Garbutt married Doris Fisher. This couple seem to have moved around a bit as they appear to have had 9 children between 1920 and 1933, but no James or Joan.
I can see the death registration of James in Bedford in 2004, age 81, with the birth date that you give.
Thomas H Garbutt married Doris E Marshman in Northallerton in the June quarter 1936. They had a son Stephen in 1941 in Durham. Thomas H Garbutt died in Durham SE in 1952 age 53, so he should appear in the 1901 census (and in 1911 where you can access the index free at http://www.1911census.co.uk/ ). But I can't see him in 1901.The birth of a Thomas Henry Garbutt was registered in the Dec quarter 1899 in Stokesley, which whilst it's also in North Yorks is some way from Thirsk and Northallerton.
There's the birth of a Fred Garbutt in Thirsk registration district in the June quarter 1895, and the death of a Fred Garbutt age 65 in the Dec quarter 1961 also in Durham SE
Not much seems to add up here!
Do you have either of James' marriage certificates? Who was his first wife? What was his second wife's maiden and married names?

I have viewed the indexes on 3 sites and like Stephen can not find any relevent informtion to confirm what you stated. First do you know where James was born. Having his birth and death dates I am sure you have that information. Was his sister Joan older or younger and who did she marry. There is a very good chance we can find the father Fred on the 1911 or 1901 census if we have more information.

Permalink Reply by Ann Ward on May 31, 2011 at 12:04pm Thank you for responding. I have very little information on that side of the family. I only recently found Stephen Garbutt whose parents are Tom and Doris. Unfortunately I only speak with one of the children that James adopted and she doesn't have a lot of information. My understanding is that there was a lot of moving around when they were younger. I will definitely try to get more information. I appreciate everything that you and Stephan helped me with. I am trying to build a family history for my children.
