JoAnn Adele replied to JoAnn Adele's discussion N.R. on 1878 map of Hungerford twp, Hastings county in the group Ontario Genealogy
"Thank you.  This makes sense. I knew there were Mohawks in the area, but after I posted this, I found out they had one large reservation in the south part of the township."

"The top left hand part of the township map suggests N.R. stands for Non Resident. http://digital.library.mcgill.ca/countyatlas/images/maps/townshipmaps/has-m-hungerford.jpg"

N.R. on 1878 map of Hungerford twp, Hastings county

There are many properties on the 1878 map of Hungerford which show only the initials N.R. although there is lots of room to write the full name.  I am wondering if this abbreviation stands for Native Reservation. See More

"Have you checked City directories, or Voters Lists?  Voters Lists are available from 1935 to 1983.  Of course, he would not be on the Voters Lists unless he stayed long enough to be naturalized.  Did you check the 1940 US census to…"

"What do you have that gives his birthplace as Wales, possibly Radnorshire? Let's take it one step at a time. His baptism first, which should give his parents. Once you've got that, which may not be easy, you can move on to his siblings,…"

STEPHENS, Shadrack 1761-1837

Born 1761 in Wales for certain. Possibility of Radnorshire. I have muster records for him in the american Revolution, He joined in South Carolina when he was 17, in 1778. No other Stephens were in the South Carolina Loyalists. From this I am guessing that he was sent from Wales with a boatload of orphans when he was between the age of 8 and 12, and went to work with an unrelated family. He was a POW in North Carolina for the last 22 months of the war. Sent to New York State at the conclusion…See More
